The dealer claimed that the 98-11-9 TSB was only for AUTOMATICS and that the 97-23-12 TSB (for a clunk) covered only through 1997 Rangers. I don't know what to do! Anyone with a 1998 manual transmission having the same problems and had them fixed? Ben Held Simulation Technology & Applied Research, Inc. 11520 N. Port Washington Rd. From: tarmy > sounds like you did not have repairs done at a ford garage. sounds like > they did not flush transmission cooler > Actually, we addressed that very issue. The tech said they did indeed flush the entire system, the tubes in the radiator as well as the external cooler. But he said that even a complete flushing does not always get everything out, and that since tranny fluid has detergent properties, hard-set grundge can break loose the flush missed can break loose after a repair. To be fair, the old tranny had not been serviced for 50K(!), so I guess that just about anything could have been hiding in the cooler.... Mike, There are no performance shops in La jolla. Nuthin' but rich folks out that way. But across the tracks (literally, there are train tracks separating La Jolla from the eastward towns) in Kearny Mesa there is an Off Road Warehouse and a Four Wheel Parts Wholesalers (think that's what it is, but it's right next to Comp USA so you can pick up a computer right after you get some work done on your truck). In Mira Mesa there is a 4x4 Unlimited that does good work. If I remember right, it was something like 8 gallons bigger, so it might the bill. Sounds like they remold the tank to fit in empty spaces under the truck. Or is this something that most folks don't bother with? FYI: I have a 98 Ranger 4x4 Supercab with 235/75/16 and I would eventually like to go up a little bit in tire size. Of course I'm going to wait until my current tires need to be replaced, so this won't happen any time soon. Has anyone experimented with larger tires on Rangers w/o lifts? I do plan to lift the truck a little in the future but no more than 4" Thanks Dave == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Aug 1998 09:41:53 -0700 From: "Pete Lawless" Subject: FTE Small - RE: Moving On Mike: Get your A/C recharged :-) it's been hanging around 110 degrees for the last week up here in the Santa Clara valley and down south through the desert's been hitting 120. San Diego (and all of southern cal for that matter) is ripe with performance shops.... shouldn't be a problem finding one! Good luck. Later..... Is this kind of thing safe for the vehicle and how is it most commonly done? do shops do it? or is it a self service thing. I am dreading this job. Yes, and you should - this stuff is NASTY. For one, it will go right through your latex gloves as if there weren't on! I found that the yellow, kitchen (rubber) variety does work. The fumes will kill you... do it outside if at all possible. EVEN then, set up a big floor-fan and ensure that you're breathing "fresh" air and not any fumes... if you get any of it on your skin, you **WILL** hurt - burns like mad... not a "physical" burn (I can't see it now, a day later) but it hurts like hell. Use a NEW, flexible putty knife to scoop up the "crud" that used to be your finish. You will _most likely_ need as many applications as there are coats of paint (CC, base, primer -> 2-3 applications). It WILL take primer off down to bare metal... Get a can of Naval Jelly while you're in there store... you WILL need it to prevent flash-rust (forms in about 10-20 min if the humidity is high enough)... You can treat it later, too... just don't panic when you see rust color everywhere :-) See, you're NOT supposed to look forwards to it... but it does beat the grind/sand/putty cycle... barely :-) *** I'm bummed... I thought I had minimal rust on the passenger side of my B2 (looked good enough) BUT, alas, same deal... had to cut out about 4x5 swath from the part of the fender behind the passenger seat... it was ALL rotted... and I'll have to use the solid-angle 1/8" reinforcement... can't weld to air... also lots of holes in the "trunk" area on the passenger side... sigh. More pics... will work on it when I get back from a trip Friday.. [damn damn damn :-] == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Aug 1998 21:57:18 -0700 From: Pat Brown Subject: FTE Small - Bronco II CV Joints / Driveshaft Hello All, Well, a few weeks back, my son tells me the Baby Bronco is making funny noises when leaving stop signs. I go for a ride, sure enough it produces a nice clickety-clack after a full stop. I crawl under and tap the boot off the rear CV joint, and pack it full of grease. Funny noises gone . . . I call around, get prices from $115 (Kragen's rebuild - lifetime guarentee) to $350 (local drivetrain shop). I go to Kragen's and order the rebuild, pick it up a couple days later. Bummer. It's a full eight inches too long. I return it, they parts droid calls the supplier - they don't even want to talk too him about BII driveshafts. They say "every one of them is a different length". I get my money back, and decide to concentrate on getting ready to go on vacation (next day). The Bronco will have to wait until I return. I pick up a few needed supplies ( a radiator for my F-250 :-) and grab a couple of magazines to read when the water is too rough to ski (life is tough sometimes). So, sitting at the lake later that week, I'm scanning through Off Road magazine, I spot a couple of ads for BII driveshafts. When I returned home, I called Dick's Driveshaft in Phoenix, and ordered a custom driveshaft ($140 + $20 shipping). He had OEM style CV shafts for $95, I ordered the custom driveshaft which uses standard U-joints and slip joints. All I needed was to measure the distance between the flanges in the truck (34 inches). 4-5 days later, UPS dropped a nice box at my house, full of driveshaft. A slightly longer than anticipated installation (hey, them bolts are TIGHT! and LOCKTIGHTED!) and now the baby bronc is back on the road! Not Affiliated with Dick, or his driveshaft shop, just a happy customer:.... To access the rest of this feature you must be a logged in Registered User Of Ford Truck Enthusiasts
