I own a '91 Explorer XLT, 4 dr, 2wd and I am also wanting to stick a 302 or better yet the new 281 4.6L Cobra engine in depending on the cost. Maybe a long term goal for the XLT, now I'm working on getting the suspension the way I want. Just thought I'd drop a line to a fellow Explorer owner. Ok, first if I were you I'd contact Advance Adapters. They have kits to facilitate your swap. Otherwise It'd be good just to get the information and see a few ideas etc.. As for computer help....you'll have to ask around. I don't even pretend to know much about fuel injection...i'm quite comfortable with my Holley's. Obviously your computer will have to be changed, swapped with a computer from your donor vehicle. Speaking of which, find a donor vehicle. Maybe a late 80's mustang with fuel injection would be good. Tear down the engine and build appropriately. You didn't mention whether your explorer was a manual or automatic, but obviously you're going to need a tranie too. For ranger swaps most people use a C4 transmission...you don't want to do this. It's only a 3 speed. I've looked into going with a C6 (4 speed) but it's way too complicated and tight fitting. If you want to, look into a new venture 4500, or their new 6 speed the 5800. the new venture 4500 is a 5 speed manual. The transmission is bulletproof and can be found in GM (yuck) products. Advance adapters can set you up with an adapter to switch trannie's. I don't know what you have for a rear axle. You might consider upgrading. All in all i can't give you a price estimate. You need to scrounge parts. The most expensive items will be the engine, trans, and rear axle if you need one. Then, once you have these you need to measure for a driveshaft length. You might want to upgrade the u joints on the driveshaft too. phew....uhhh....other than that i can't think of anything. as for frame mods...i don't know....i'm unsure of explorer clearances etc....but i guarantee it will fit. You might need a different oil pan to clear front axle components too. Whatever you do...don't entertain the notion of using a body lift to give yourself more engine bay room. i had one in my two wheel drive and i hated it. It came out about 2 months ago... Keep me posted...and send pictures of the truck:) Fitzy > Thanx, > it is a 93 explorer sport 2wd. headers would be nice, but that is > secondary. I know a friend of mine has a `94 supercab automatic 4.0L and gets close to 30mpg. and on my 2.3L reg.cab 5 speed I average 21MPG with mixed driving. I also have a tonneau, and I usually wind out the gears too (have to). Although one time I did get 32 MPG. that was on a 175 mi. trip WITH a 600lb snowmobile in the back, and average speed of about 55mph. I was quite impressed with that trip, but then on the way home it was windy and I only got 17MPG. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Mar 1998 15:16:40 EST From: Horsepowrd Subject: V8 Rangers and Explorers Anyone interested in putting a V8 into a Ranger or an Explorer Contact Total Performance in Michigan. I have a 96 Ranger, 3.0, 5spd and I am thinking about changing the rear end ratio to something that will let this engine/trans combo have a little more acceleration. I've got the 3.45 gears in it now, and while it is great for gas mileage, it lacks the jump that I would like. Suggestions as to which ratio I should pick would be appreciated.
