What scares me most about the concept of Good Old Days is that someday, these will be the Good Old Days !! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 May 1998 10:14:06 -0400 From: Chuck Anderson Subject: oil-leaking 2.9 I have a 1990 Bronco II with a 2.9. The vehicle has about 145,000 miles, looks good and runs great. It's the most dependable vehicle I've ever owned. The only problem, valve cover gaskets. I've replaced them before but they keep leaking. Is there a manufacturer that makes a rubber-like gasket? The cork gaskets just do not do the job. Cork + RTV blue on both sides does a good job. 30K+ thus far... no sign of even seepage. (Degrease both mating surfaces with engine-degreaser followed by acetone. Straighten out the valve cover where the screws hold it down, apply RTV in a continuous bead to both surfaces of gasket, place in gasket in cover (most have tabs that hold it aligned, RTV holds it in place while upside-down) and torque ONLY until bolts start moving cover down. Let cure (usually 24hrs). Tighten down 1 turn more. Presto :-) Take care. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 May 1998 09:56:33 -0500 (CDT) From: S-10 Killer Subject: Re: fordRangers.com? Hey when did you start going to Sam Houston State? SHSU.edu has been banned from ford ranger. com for quite some time now. Too many problems thanks to Larry and Jay (aka Reddog, aka Goober) Ill see what I can do. All posts to the old lists after this time will disappear into the bit bucket without a trace. Emails such as "why aren't my posts getting through" and "why is the list dead" will be ignored - take this as Fair Warning (Lord, strike that poor boy down.... sorry Deacon, couldn't resist). The switch should take a couple of hours but don't count on it. Once the switch takes place, an email will be sent to all list members containing subscribe, unsubscribe and posting instructions. After receiving this email you'll be able to post. Subscribe requests to the old server will simply result in an email containing new subscribe instructions. The web site and FAQ will be updated to reflect the server change. Also, no posts prior to downtime will get lost. I'll be forcing a digest to go out to digest members about 5 minutes before the shutdown so everyone will get their FTE fix. A few things that helped me decide: Dana 35's use the same size knuckles and u-joints as the Dana 44 TTB and, as OX stated, you can help beef this up with Spicer's; the D35 ring and pinion is not a weak point; properly set-up the D35 can achieve some pretty impressive articulation; the D35 is a direct bolt-in (no cutting, welding, adapting) with basically the same track width and same bolt pattern; lastly, cost. Plus I'm just one of those guys that likes to go against the grain and challenge the popular notion that TTB's are worthless. My Dana 28, although overpowered by the 35" tires and 4.56 gears, impressed a lot of solid axle boys over the years. And, hey, I can always cut and weld later!! It is supposed to stay on until you start the truck, or for a max of 30 seconds. In my Ranger, it may or may not. Usually the light doesn't come on when it is supposed to. However once it didnt go off for an hour, until I found it on and opened and closed the door a few times. In the warm (summer) weather, it generally does bettere than in cold weather. There is something else that may be related. When you are exiting the truck and you put your hand on the interior door handle of the driver's side, you get a small pulsating shock if your fingers touch the screws in that handle. Is there an electrical system manual for the 95 Ranger that might be helpful? The truck is still under the original warantee, but I would like to be knowledgeable when I take it in to the Dealer. Any thoughts or suggestions? Is it simply a box that has to be replaced, or does it sound more complex? As you can tell, I am not a mechanic. Get the ones from Felpro. They make the rubber versions with the metal inserts where the bolt holes are. Also, clean both surfaces real well with a good grease/oil cutter. Then use some high temperature RTV that is oil resistant to add additional sealing to both surfaces. When you re-install the screws, use some loctite, 242 on the threads. That will help them to not loosen up due to engine vibrations. Used this technique on my 86 Ranger, 2.9 about 120,000 miles ago and they are still sealed and dry. It pays to take the extra time to do it right. Took me about 6 hours to do both sides cause there isn't much room to work in there! I bought one when I was having door chime problems. (The thought of going to a dealer makes me break out in a cold sweat) Castillo, Jose A.
