I took everything apart at least two times and could never find any thing wrong. I finally found the problem when I had some one depress the clutch while I was looking into the clutch inspection cover on top of the bell housing. The problem was that the clutch was never being fully released by the pressure plate. This was caused because the fly wheel and rebuilt pressure plate had been turned, to get a smooth surface, and now the clutch relese rod did not have enough adjustment or horizional movement. My fix was I had a machine build me a longer rod with a longer threaded portion. I reinstalled the rod and now the clutch will release completely and my shifting problems have stopped. Take a look and see if this doesn't help. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Aug 1997 14:18:46 -0400 From: jack fleming Subject: RE: ID of an IFS - ------ =_NextPart_000_01BCB0BC.F5F14020 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Thanks Dan, I'll check it out and let you know...... - ---------- From: Dan Wentz[SMTP:dwentz Sent: Friday, August 22, 1997 5:55 PM To: fordtrucks-digest Subject: Re: ID of an IFS >My recently purchased '54 F-100 has a front-end clip that was grafted on = >by a previous owner. Hmm...you said you have problems with the steering *box*? That eliminates Mustang II because that has rack & pinion. Look at the steering box: if it mounts to the front crossmember then it's a Volare, if it mounts to the frame then it's a GM. And if you see a torsion bar under there then it's definitely a Volare. Chances are it's a Volare just because it's so much more common than the GM.
