Hey truck folks, The days are getting shorter and cooler and I'm starting to think about how I'm going to stay warm in my '71 F100 w/FE390 this winter.. My '71 has a really pathetic heater. Everything is in good working order, but it doesn't do a very good job keeping things (ME) warm. It's got a new heater core and control valve but the core is itty-bitty and just isn't up to the task when it's really cold out. I run a 195F thermostat during the winter and that helps a little, but I'm trying to decide what else I can do before cold weather gets here. Are there any heavier duty heater parts or setups that use a bigger core that will fit my '71? Any tips or suggestions on how to make mine work better? Is everyone (anyone?) else out there with old trucks staying warm? I'm starting to eyeball those 2 Bosch gasoline heaters I've got laying in the garage. They came out of old VW busses but they are starting to look more and more like Ford parts.... Will I have to change oil pans? If the 460 was a factory option, you should be able to use the truck factory mounts, not the car mounts (frame differences, etc.). For the same reason(s), the car and truck oil pans were different. On the M-blocks, for example, the cars had 5-qt pans while the trucks had 6-qt pans on the same engines. - ------------------------------ >From: Don Grossman >Subject: Re: 300 to 302 conversion >I thought that the 300 six, 302-351w, 351c all used the same >bellhousing? I have a 351c in the garage and the bellhousing from the >300 bolts right up. One thing to watch for on bell housings is the depth. Well known is the fact that the M-block (351M/400) bell housing bolt pattern matches the 429/460 pattern. According to a Ford dealership parts guy (of unknown reliability), the bell housings are actually different for those two engine families. He told me that the 429/460 bell housing was longer than the M-block bell housing, with the clutch release lever in a different place. I don't know for sure if that's true (no other confirmation), but I'd check it out if I was doing a swap. Another thing to watch out for is the clutch itself. The 351M came with an 11" clutch and the 400 came with a 12" clutch. I'm not sure what size the clutch should be with a 460. Dave R. I located and fixed the problem with the 390. It was all in adjustments in timing - had WAY to much being contributed by the vacuum advance device and static timing was 11 degress - got all set as per my shop manual and the old 'bird sings a whole new song. Gona take the advice of many who gave alternatives to the four bar rear and continure to investigate options... Thanks again to all... === Bill in Texas '64 Thunderbird Hardtop '64 F100 Shortbox _____________________________________________________________________ Sent by RocketMail.
