Your strange motor was a YBlock. It came into Fords in 1954 and replaced
the flathead. It was Ford's first attempt at an overhead valve V8. It
really had 16 pushrods, I don't know what was wrong with yours! The YBlock
displacements were 239, 252, 272, 292, and 312. The highest performance
motors went into Thunderbirds and some even got supercharged. It had
unique stacked ports, intake over exhaust. 1957 was the highpoint for
YBlocks, they declined as Ford designed freer breathing motors. It was a
good bracket racer, making lots of torque. It did not like sustained high
rev operation, so was not a good circle track racer. After 59, the Yblock
was mostly a truck and school bus motor. In 63, the Yblock was abandoned
because the 260-289-302 series was much better.
$2500 isn't too bad for a running Effie if it hasn't been hacked too much.
Check out October issue of Classic Trucks magazine for a great "how to
buy a classic truck" article.

Being a shortbed stepside with a 25 gallon booster tank in the back
already, there's room for the tire and maybe two bags of groceries. I
can carry more in the RX7 than in the F100. Bleedin' embarrasin', it
is.

Hmm... one of those little bozomobile rollers - a foot tall and a foot
wide, stuck completely outside the fenderwell - might give me some extra
room in the bed. But I might as well not have a spare at all then,
since I'd be too embarrassed to be seen driving on it.

The 64 F-100 was the last year to have a strait axle. Motors were a 223
inline 6 or a 292 V-8.
Some Deluxe models came with an overdrive transmission

No way will I give up my 9". In my 64 I have a 351C and a "3 on the tree".
I have blown apart the clutch, broke universal joints and bent a drive
shaft.
I have never hurt the rear end. I think you are just having "bad luck".

I keep the Digest tying up free space in the computer for a couple of
days, and I see that I did NOT get #218. I wondered why I felt like I'd
missed something!
By the way, you're not ignoring us F-250 owners in that model year
breakdown, are you? I mean, Ford made more than just F-100s! ;-)

bad luck? no, probobly just too much torque combined with too much
traction!

i am not saying the 9" is a bad axle - it is by far one of the best ever!
this last one went thru all season (about 10 pulls and some hard street....
