I pulled the cover/throwout guide and now I have some questions regarding the assembly. Since the seal is installed backwards in the cover, do I have to find a piece of pipe or a socket that will fit inside the seal lip in order to press it in without damaging it? And the input shaft has a little side to side play, Should I or can I replace the bearing or is this just the normal preload of this bearing? It hasnt been a problem, I am just taking preventative measures. Also, after I get the engine in I was thinking about replacing the output seal and I need to know if there is any sort of crush sleeve proceedure and can I work the yoke nut off with an impact wrench? Thanks in advance. Mark Mech 1913 E. Has anyone tried replacing the rubber > bushings with polyurethane. I've seen poly replacements and wondered > if they would create a harsh ride or excess noise. I put poly bushings in my bronco and it has made the steering response more mushy but the ride quality is a little better now. It doesn't wander it just feels like pushing your fist into a soft foot ball when you turn a corner etc. but that's primariy due to the track bar flex and it's bushing in my case. It goes where I expect it, just not as crisply as my T Bird :-) I should think the bushings would have to be VERY soft to cause wandering since the geometry is primarily responsible for controling that and will if it's free enough to do it's job in my experience anyway :-) The swift of foot and slow of wit have more off road experiences - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 11:50:02 +0000 From: "Gary, 78 BBB" Subject: Re: Vacuum advance Dura spark II dist. > From: danadeb > Date: Fri, 29 Aug 1997 18:49:16 -0700 > Subject: Vacuum advance Dura spark II dist. > There is a physical difference between the old (pre 73ish) vacuum > advance cans and the Dura Spark II. The dist is on my 460 in my 1970 Don't shoot me if you've already looked into this but it's my opinion that the engine never sees all the advance available in the vac when under any load but due to lean idle mixture etc. needs the extra advance for best idle smootheness. The vac will only be fully open on decelleration and at idle but the point where this happens can be adjusted with the spring tension. Consider this: at 60 mph you get about 14" on the vac, on decelleration maybe 25" and at idle maybe 20". At any throttle opening under load you get less than 14 so what ever it puts in at 14 is essentially what you're concerned with and this can be adjusted again with the spring pressure. There are several vac's which work with this distributor but since they are all lean burn versions they will probably have 30 degrees or so built in but will have different spring rates which will effectively move the advance where you want it IMHO at least. I will be playing with this myself soon, perhaps this weekend :-) The 10 - 12 initial and 34 - 38 degree total timing you keep hearing about is for racing where the engine basically runs at WOT all the time and in the case of a performance street machine the vac is out of the loop under these conditions anyway so the key IMHO (and I'm going to test this in the next few days) is to get the vac to drop out of the loop soon enough to avoid spark knock at low rpms which can be accomplished, again with the spring pressure. (I hope) If you really think you need to block it you can remove the stator plate and put a screw in it as a stop. The plate is soft steel and can be drilled and tapped. Use an allen head, fine thread screw with the head left up for the stop and the bottom end filed flush to allow free movement of the plates over each other :-) The swift of foot and slow of wit have more off road experiences - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:19:25 -0400 From: Schottsweb Subject: Motor Mounts Does anyone know where I can find the motor mounts for a 302 into a 69 F-100 2wd. Yesterday, he bought himself another truck a 95 of which I am not going to mention on this list. So the F350 is out of the picture and my 79 F150 is providing me an excellent service. I wish to thank all the fellows who took the time to reply to me and especially to Garry for your advice. He did replace the plastic bushings and he says it's the long steering box, but he was fed up with it. Thank Again, fellows. I want to crank it > without total breakdown, and have had several recommendations for My guess is that the crank will be badly pited and the rings may be set up so that attempting to crank it may break a ring and score the cylinder rendering the block useless for a rebuild without sleeving. Dumping fuel oil or some such in there will only loosen dibris which will find it's way into things. I recommend you pop the pan and pull one or two main caps to get a glimps of the general condition and pull off one head and take a peek before you try it. Once you look inside you may decide to tear it down. You may get lucky and It may even run for a while but if your intention is to restore it, why not start with the engine? This would be a great way to start his education. My grand dad gave me an old washing machine engine to play with and I could take it apart and put it back together blindfolded when I was 13 years old. This started a life long love for mechanical things which still eats up all my spare time (and agrivates my wife) today :-) The swift of foot and slow of wit have more off road experiences - -- Gary -- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 13:08:03 -0700 From: danadeb Subject: Re: Vacuum advance Dura spark II dist. The trouble started the day after I brought the truck home. the gear on the end of the dist sheared the roll pin. ( I fixed the oil pump problem that caused it ) I went to the local auto parts store and bought a rebuilt point dist. All was fine until the used vacuum canister developed a leak. ( it was one of the good ones with removable spring and stop )I replaced the canister with a newer style canister ( adjustable spring tension only) because that's all they had. Since then I have had a time trying to get the spark curve correct. The newer style canisters seem to have around 20-30 deg of advance add that to the 10 deg of mechanical plus 6 or so initial and you get 36-46 deg total as measured from the damper pulley. I have replaced the dist many times now one actually came from the rebuilder with 50 total deg's of advance. finally I decided to switch over to a Dura Spark II system. From the rebuilder it has a total of 30 deg's advance the mechanical starts at 2500 and is all in by around 3000-3500 the vacuum can provide 20 deg's and seems to come on too fast. Stats: 1970 F250 1974 460 automotive eng. Timing chain replaced. (I believe the cam is now straight up or at worst 4 deg's retarded. Stock is 8 deg's retarded) 1977 Dura Spark II dist. and control module. set at 0 deg initial Spread bore 1974 Motorcraft carb C6 auto 33" rear tires 3.54 rear ratio Symptom: Under slow acceleration every thing is ok. Under medium to hard acceleration, engine misses and backfires. Before switch to Dura Spark II at above 2500 rpm at freeway speeds very noticeable miss. After switch miss is almost gone but still have acceleration problems. I hope I have provided enough info. A pleasant post this time :) I went to a Pick A Part the other day and was looking at a Lincoln with rear disk and was wondering if it would bolt on to my 9". The Lincoln had a 9" rear but with coils and looked to be a little shorter than the one in my truck. They want $120 for the backing plates, calipers, disks and master cylinder. It would be well worth the price if it is adaptable. Any thoughts? PS I'm changing ISPs so the homepage is history for a couple of weeks. Then I'll be in a better mood ;] Later!
