I >have replaced the front suspension with a Volarie set up and would >like to finish the "street rod" job. No I don't do off-road or heavy >hauling with this truck. Daily driver... Are you sure that you want a 4-link on a daily driver?!? They don't exactly provide stellar ride characteristics. 4-links are great for drag racing, but unless properly set-up, can make the handling of the vehicle *squirrely* at best. I would recommend a traction (slapper) bar setup for the street; it is easier to set up, it will cost a hell of a lot less than back-halving your truck, it has better street manners, you can still haul, and it will probably provide you with more than enough traction. Competition Engineering (203-453-5200) has an excellent traction bar product. I you *must* have a 4-link, I would call Chris Alston's ChassisWorks (916-388-0288) and talk to them about your options...they are very knowledgeable. >(2) Now this is non-truck question so forgive me... I have a '64 >TBird (390/4V). The 390 kinda relates to trucks, right :-). Had a >miss (or surge) coming off idle, replaced ALL ignition parts, rebuilt >the 4100, replaced the vacuum advance (AutoZone). Miss still there >and a awfull knock (sounded like rods). Weeeell, disconnected the >vacuum advance to check timing, dwell, etc, and the miss was not there >when I came off idle. Came up to 3000 rpm, smooth as can be, no miss, >no knock. Plugged the line to carb, jumped in and went for a drive. >Smooth, good acceleration, no hesitation (for a 4500lb car with the AC >on). What gives? This is a "dual advance" distributor and the >mechanicals seem to be working just fine... What would cause the >vacuum advance push the timing so far forward. The part number on the >advance I got was correct even according to Ford. All other vacuum >stuff is working fine (and Lord knows there is a ton on the these old >Birds) - this is a 390 question, not a Tbird question. BTW, the >engine has 81K on it, has had a complete head workup done - new >springs, lifters, push rods, valves, milling, etc. I had a problem that sounds very similar to this. I had mechanical advance springs that were weak on the distributor on my truck, causing the advance to come in way too early. I replaced the springs for about 2 bucks, and voila, it was fixed. Check your timing (without vacuum), and rev the motor slowly to see when the advance comes in. If it comes on full real soon, and not a gradual increase of timing, this could be your problem. Mine showed up as 28-30 deg. at about 1500 rpm. Add the vacuum advance to this, and you have an instant 40+ deg. plus a nasty ping/spark knock. Hope this helps, and good luck. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Aug 1997 12:50:38 -0700 From: sdelanty Subject: Re: New Guy / wandering truck >However, my brother Gerry has a '74 F350 460/C6 and has also had this >from just about new. The only other things I didn't see mentioned are the steering coupling (rag joint) and make sure the steering box is WELL attached to the frame. I've seen the bolts get loose and the box can move a little. Also, maybe You are looking under the wrong end.? After I finished fully rebuilding the front on my '71, it still had a small amount of wander on uneven or gusty windy roads. After I replaced all the suspension bushings on the REAR axle it went away. They were sloppy enough to allow a small amount of "rear steer" under load. Go figure... >Also, anyone know of any company from Arkansas who sell/manufactures >Port >Fuel Injection Manifolds for the 460CID. Sure, Ford sells 'em! The later 460's came with EEC-IV port injection. Go find a 90's 460 truck at the wreckers and have a look. Manifold, injectors, sensors, brain, harness, it's all to be had if You can find a wrecked one.! Instead of being sensible and using Toyota 4x4 steering (or some other tested method) I tried to fit a GM box in there. This hasn't been done very much that I know of, and possibly never in a truck with a 351C. The box fit the frame as it was supposed to, and the cross steer stuff fit okay (a little close to the tranny for my taste but it fit). The problem was with the box clearing critical parts of the truck. First, the box sat over the spring, so if the front came close to bottoming out the spring would hit the steering box. I shimmed it out to clear the spring, but that just made my other problem, exhaust clearance, worse. The box ended up being right up against the engine. The stock manifold wouldn't clear, and neither would some fairly tight block huggers. I might have been able to get custom headers welded up, but the quotes I got were quite obscene. I considered moving the box, but the cross steer rod would hit the transmission if I moved it back and the motor mount kept the box from going up any more. I considered moving the engine back, but that would generate the same problem as moving the box up.....
