When I first got my truck, the transmission (1950-1995 RIP) did that same
thing. I just assumed it was the clutch and replaced it--never had the
problem again.

Subject: 51 Tranny Addendum

Oh yeah--this slipped my mind earlier. You might want to try letting the
clutch out in neutral on your way down to first gear. I had forgotten what
a pain the spur gears are (got spoiled by the T5 in my other car).
