Red oak has a softer looking grain and is easier to work with. Pine is course and harder to get a smooth finish. If you want original, please use Southern Yellow Pine. Oak, Ash, Birch or Maple looks better than pine and is easier to work with if you have the correct saws and blades. The hard woods that I listed also will take a finish better, just take a look at your better furniture. Pine was cheaper in those days and was not used for something as mundane a truck bed floors. I hope this clears up what I was trying to say. It's on page 201 of their current catalog and sells for $19.95. They list 2 other books on page 200. The first is titled "Automotive Electrical Handbook" by Jim Horner ($14.95), and the other is "How to Wire Your Street Rod From Start to Finish" by Jack Sweeden ($7.99). Mark, the ECZ prefix designates it a 312 block, 6015 is the basic part number for a Ford block. This was used on all years for the 312 starting in 1956. 1958 thru 1960 it was used in Mercury cars. 1957 was the best year from a performance view, most horsepower. You should locate the date code on the front of the engine block , behind the water pump, next to the edge of the valley cover. This will tell you the date the engine was assembled at Ford when it is decoded. This is a stamped number so you may have to clean away some grunge to see it. The first number is the year in the 1950 decade, ie 8=58. The next character is a letter for the month (A-M, I not used), then the next 2 numbers are the day. The 312 was not used in trucks but could be adapted with the truck mounts. The truck engines have a center front mount and side mounts on the bell housing. There is no code to designate what car this came from, but it defintely came from a car not a truck. The Y-block engine blocks from trucks were same as cars. The 1953 trucks had the 239 flathead engine so you will have to adapt 54 or later truck motor mounts to your frame. Not sure if these will bolt in. If you send me an email off list I can send you a picture of the front mount from the Ford Illustrations Catalog. Then you can decide if you want to buy those parts. Looks like the rear mounts are the same from 53 -56. Pictures really help. The distance between the front mount and rear mounts may be different between the 2 engine series. At worst you would have to fabricate an adapter plate out of 1/4 inch steel plate for the front mount. Roger 55 F100 soon to have a 292 == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info http://www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2000 19:12:23 -0500 From: "Howard H. I used the book when I wired my last truck from "scratch"-the first time I ever did that actually. The wiring still works just great and I just followed one of his many examples. Its a great book in my opinion. I've seen other electrical books, but this one was super easy to read and follow. I recommend it highly. I bought mine from the Speedway Motors catalog as I recall, but you can go direct to him too. There is blank space below Search, which indicates to me that list is complete, and my concentration shifts elswhere on the page. Only after I go poking around for a while do I notice there are additional choices in that frame (?), in a different format. Therefore I didn't find it right away. You and I know we have different opinions on this matter, and I don''t want to belabor the point.
