I got it for 600 bucks. It needs some work but is over all very solid. It has a 390 c-6 with an 8 or 9 inch rear. I'm not sure about the rear yet. The engine was installed with a tubular cross member so it wasn't a total hack job. My question is what can be decifered from the trucks vin number? I know the truck had an auto trans since it has the factory column still in it. But I'm not sure which engine it had originally. I plan on making it a everyday driver with a modern drive train and suspension and a tow vehicle for my race car. Let me tell you how I feel about the 350, or any of the recent "upgrades" available for that engine: I have a '59 Ch*vy Impala awaiting restoration in my "garage". I have owned the car for a number of years, and once upon a time it was my only transportation. I got SO TIRED of having some guy walk over and look at the 283 that I was rather proud of and ask "Why dontcha put a 350 innit?" that I actually screamed at a couple of guys "I happen to LIKE the 283!!!!" If I see a 350 in ANY kind of street rod, I spend little time looking under the hood any more. To customize a vehicle is to create something unusual, even unique. If you wrap a nice paint job and sheet metal work around the almost ubiquitous 350/TH350 combo, a lot of that originality is lost. C'mon! Make that Y-block breathe! See if you can get a few more ponies out of that 200 in your '65 Ranchero! (Call me if you do!) Don, GM should have gone out of business when they built the last '59 they're the only models I really like. Name it, Chevy, Caddy Olds, they are all so ugly they're beautiful. I've been trying to figure out for years how those cat eye taillights would look best on a pickup, and as far as engines, if they'd quit with the 327 the world would be a happier place. Who says a Y block won't "breathe" with a isky 3/4 race cam and a Holley 500 CFM 2 bbl, my '56 312 would run 6 grand in every gear and with 3.50 gears that's close to 120. ('course it took a few miles to get there, but a '57 sedan is pretty heavy). 47Fred == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info http://www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 08:45:14 -0800 From: Daniel Swagger Subject: Re: FTE Pre61 - Starts like new My son and I have a '51 F1 with a highly upgraded '52 o/h six and we have had problems starting the beast. The starter seemed to "drag" and turn the engine over so slow that it could not catch. After replacing cables, coils, points, plugs, and my attitude-----we pulled the srarter off to have a rebuild business check it out. Well, good news was the starter was our problem. Bad news was more money towards the '51. The problem turned out to be some one had put a 12 volt armature inside a 6 volt unit and we ended up with the "drag". Because we purchased the truck as a BOX project, now I'll expect to look out for more things that require a second look. Roger Hughes wrote: > I know how that feels. I totally agree. One of my fondest memories is when I was at a show with my club and got a call that one of the members broke down on the way to the hotel. Hooked up my little old 55 and pulled his 50 Ch*vy, with a 350 Ch*vy engine all the way back to the hotel. He had to trailer it home. We drove! Even got a picture. He doesn't give me much grief about Fords anymore. Denny 55F100 >> I am all for keeping this list "Ford" and installing anything in a "Ford" would be keeping with "Ford" If we started talking about how to adjust Volare' suspension or tuning up a Chevy engine, I think we would be off the track. Installing Corvette rear suspension in our Ford would be helpful but rebuilding the Corvette rear suspension would be BAD. I ride a Harley and I have been given a lift by BSA's and a Honda. We share the riding sport. I have also helped Honda riders in trouble and anyone who rides if they are in trouble, they will get help from me. However, when Honda riders come into a Harley chat room they are not welcome anymore than I am welcome if I go to a Honda chat room. Just seems right. I agree that some of us share the same views but most do not. Again I say if you want original keep it that way. If not do what YOU want. I like looking at originals but love looking at custom builds. I look forward to the day when I get my 56 rebuilt I hear the questions," How did you do that?". I am not meaning to slam anyone here and if this offends it is not meant that way, But anybody can unbolt a part and rebolt the same part.(original). I prefer to see the challenges that people conquered by doing something different. I know that using a 350 or 327, whatever is not really being different, But to the purists it is a sin. I do not care what anybody wants to do with their projects as long as it suits them. But in any case it takes a lot of time and effort to achieve how we prefer our Fords. More so with changing things. I am also not limited to what type of vehicle to talk about. I have friends that drive other than Ford. Its a pleasure to me to chat any vehicle. However I agree that if you want to talk Fords this is the place to be. My opinion is "If the title says Ford lets hear about it" regardless of what front end or engine and ecetera that you may have. I have to say if you have to be that critical about what people choose to do with their Fords, It really takes the fun out of it. And to be honest I am building mine to have fun with. Please keep in mind,"Blinders distort the view of a lot of really nice Fords." I cannot find anything "reasonable" about any chev discussions, whether it be installation, fabrication, diagnosis, modifications or otherwise. This is a _FORD_ list and as Ken points out, the charter clearly states that we'll discuss _FORD_ engines only. That's why I and many others s*bscribe to FTE. To those of you that can't stick to the charter, _UNS*BSCRIBE_! Ken, your site is undoubtably the finest truck site on the web, Ford or otherwise, and I thank you for your fine efforts. But, I sincerely hope that you'll reconsider putting this to a vote and leave the charter as written. But if you don't, please make it a simple yes/no vote on whether or not chev engines can be discussed here. Thanx for listening.
