I Added an earlier ('53-'55) gas tank to my '56 a number of years back to gain extra driving range. At first I found a tank out of an early F600 thinking that "yeah, the extra capacity would be great". When I got into the job, however, I found that the larger tank is much deeper and that the tank and new running board brackets would be almost touching the ground, to say nothing about how stupid the truck would look with to left running board hanging 3 inches lower than the right one. Luckily, the salvage yard that I got the big tank from also had an F100 of the same vintage that had a usable tank and brackets in it and they let me make a swap. Now I have both tanks for more cruising range. I also added an electric switch and solenoid valve from a later model ford so that my gauge and tanks are all controlled from the dash. Now when I take it hunting, or hook up my trailer, I don't have to worry about running out of gas way out in the boonies some where. I believe the first time I filled it up, it took 17 gallons, but usually when I run it dry it will only a little over 16.5 or so gallons. Seems like to "slosh" factor holds just a little in reserve that you can't get back out.
