I have always had an understanding that products like powder coating and "jet-coating" by Eastwood are not made for high temperature applications. I was told these products couldn't be used for headers, and areas of the engine block around the exhaust ports. Anyone else heard this....or is it just me? You need to replace the field coils. 12 volt coils can be ordered from Patrick's Antique Auto Parts, I haven't seen any other suppliers. Total cost, about $60. Cermakrome is much better protection against corrosion and will withstand higher temps. I believe you can powder coat over it which would give you the best of both worlds. They recommend that you lightly glass bead the Cermakrome finish with low pressure (just rough it up, don't blast through to bare metal) to give the powder coat better adhesion. I'd check with the powder coat supplier to make sure their product will work this way. Good luck. You can have it done by an electrical shop, or you may be able to buy replacement field coils (I know they're available for 38-48, but my catalogs generally stop at 1948). >4) Do I need to use a firewall resistor once I have the 12v conversion >completed? Yes. And you'll need a new ignition coil, although you can get 12v coils with built-in ballast resistors: my wife got one at NAPA, basically asking for a '12 volt coil with ballast resistor'. Or you could get a wire with built-in resistance. I know early Mustangs used this instead of a resistor, but I don't know where to get the wire separate from a whole wiring harness.
