Most bed suppliers skip the 50 with original wood bed. Previous years had wood, but it was covered by sheet metal. However, the change was a 'running change' in the 1950 model year. Todd Murthum, for instance, has several parts that go up to 'early 50,' then change to 'late 50' and up. He doesn't go by Todd Murthum Reproductions anymore - is it Northern Classics? Something like that. So. There were changes in the side panels, tailgate, probably some other bed pieces, and the floor. It may be that the wood pieces were the same throughout 48-50, and maybe the metal strips between them differ between those covered with sheet metal and those which were exposed. What does 'running change' mean? I'm not sure, but it seems likely it occurred at different dates in the various assembly plants - when they ran out of the old stuff, they started using the new stuff. Where are the ol' farts when we need 'em? I bought tailgate chains from Todd Murthum at Carlisle a couple years ago, only to determine, once I got home, that my '51 has the wrong tailgate, and the previous owner had redrilled the holes for the upper chain mount so the earlier chains would work with the later bed. If I ever completely replace my bed, I think I'll go with the 48-early 50, with the embossed sides, different fenders, the whole works, just 'cause I like the way they look. But I'll keep the exposed wood. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info http://www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 23:30:45 -0400 From: Ken Payne Subject: FTE Pre61 - Franklin Mint 56 Ford F100 watch Franklin Mint is now producing 56 Ford F100 watches.
