If you are using the stock axle housing (2-1/2") you'll need a pair of spring seat pads ( part #2883 $10 ea. from Mid-fifty's 1-800-252-1956) maybe you can use the stock U-bolts and weld up some shock mounts. Any other ideas out there? - Mick == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Oct 1998 07:56:52 EDT From: BGar02167 Subject: FTE Pre61 - Re: Help In a message dated 10/5/98 3:28:39 AM Pacific Daylight Time, owner-pre61-list- digest HELP!!!!!! >> That's FMX I believe and was considered a heavy-duty tranny. It is a good set- up if you have the small block 351 and this tranny. Someone here will be able to tell you soon exactly what engine this is. Your mechanic is probably correct. Dear David, I think I can help you. First off the numberD1AE-9425 DA is a casting number. I do have access to quite a few casting numbers, but I can't find that one. I think that you may have got it off the intake, am I right? If so I do not have those numbers. if you could get a number off the block, that would be the best. I can however tell you how to tell the difference physically between a 351C and a 351m, 400. The 351M, and 400 have a higher deck heigh than the 351 C and thus have a wider intake manifold. That difference is hard to see unless have two side by side to compare. The way I can tell at a glance, and I have used this method in salvage yards before. is to look at the front of the engine. On all Clevelands, 351Ms and 400s the thermostat housing goes directly into the block, and not the intake manifold as in other Ford engines. There is no water what so ever in the intake of a Cleveland, 531M, or 400. The front area of the engine where the distributor and the thermostat housing is located is flat except for a slight recess for the distributor on true Cleveland engs. On 351M, and 400s as you look left from the recess for the distributor you will see a rise in the block casting for the thermostat housing. this is a sure fire way to tell them apart instantly. Remember on Clevelands as you look left from the recess for the dist. it is flat all the way across to the thermostat housing. Figuring out what tranny you have is a little easier. If your Bell housing and transmission are one solid casting and your casting is aluminum you will probably have a C-6. If your tranny is cast iron and has a detachable bell housing you have a FMX. Also be aware that all small block Fords 289, 302, 351W, 351C use the same bell housing pattern, All 351M, 400, 429, 460s use the big block bell housing. What I am saying is that if you have a 351M and C-6 tranny it will not fit a 351C. I am still working on about half of the valves; however, I also discovered that I have a stuck piston. I have a block of wood that just fits in the cylinder (beating on it), but so far I have not been able to loosen it. I have been soaking the cylinder with every kind of solvent that I can think of (including anti- carbon). I was wondering if anyone had used heat in order to break a piston loose. A friend of mine wondered about dry ice. My other 7 cylinders are in really great shape, and I would hate to mess up just one cylinder. Obviously, it has to come out. Thanks to all that responded about the stuck valves. Now that the ordeal is over, I'll let everyone know what happened. Thursday night I started having numbness on the left side of my face and on my left arm. Fearing the worst, since something like this usually indicates a) heart attack, b) stroke or c) brain tumor, I went to the hospital. The EKG, blood work and cat scan came back normal. I was told to get bed rest until I could see a neurologist. On Saturday, the symptoms came back. I was given an MRI. It came back normal. Today I say the neurologist. It turns out that I was having an unusual/rare form of migraine headache. I normally don't get many headaches so this was a surprise to me! Well, its not life threatening, or even life-span threatening so as the say down under: "no worries". Thanks to the many who expressed their concerns.
