Re: FTE Pre61 - Insurance FTE Pre61 - ADMIN: New advertiser on web site ======================================================================= ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 09:24:35 -0600 From: Randall Colgan Subject: FTE Pre61 - Mustang II IFS In reply to your post Eric, I have a 52 F-1 and am presently installing a cross member for the Mustang II IFS. It's not difficult at all. As for price, your looking at $300 to $500 for the cross member kit and another $200 to $500 for the donor car. I have been told the ride improvement over the straight axle is fabulous. If you would like more info on this, visit my home page at: http://www.ford-trucks.com/trueblue Here you will find some pretty neat links. I am not familiar with the volaire clip. Till later, Date: Mon, 28 Sept 1998 09:50:33 -0400 From: "Eric E. Nesbitt" Subject: FTE Pre61 - Volaire front end. OK fellow FTE's, I've been subscribing to this list for the past few months, but this is my first posting, so here goes. First off, I have a '49 F1 that I purchased back in 1991 in California while stationed in the military. I had long been wanting a '53-'56 effie, but when I saw the styling of the '49, I fell in love with it. The truck had been used for parts on another truck, but the body was all there minus the wiring, gauges, steering, and front end. I gave the guy $350 for it, and towed it away. I found another front end and put it under the truck, and then hauled it all back to my home in South Carolina, in late 1992. The truck has sat under a tarp (I don't have a garage) since then, and I would tinker with it whenever I had the time and money, which was not very often and never enough. Recently, I have begun to make a serious effort to get it up and going, which brings me at long last to my question. I have been mulling over the pros and cons of the independent front end vs. the upgraded stock front end. Seeing as how it will cost just as much, if not more to upgrade the front end as it would to swap in an independent setup, I have decided to go independent. Being a Ford man I wanted the Mustang setup, but after talking to a few people about it, I don't think it would be worth the expense or the headache it seems to be. Which leaves the Volaire. I have seen postings with reference to the Volaire and Satellite front ends. Will any torsion bar front end be the same, the reason I'm asking is I have access to a '69 Barracuda and was wondering if it's front end would work under my '49? If anyone knows could you please let me know. I would also like to hear from anyone who has done the torsion bar front end swap in a '48-'52 F1. I have seen a cross member kit from Gibbon, but I have also heard about templates to mount the front end in a stock frame, has anyone done this? It seems that the templates would be more affordable than the (in my opinion)"over priced cross member kits". Does anyone have a set of these templates, or know where I can get them for an F1? Sorry I was so long winded, but could really use the advice and assistance. Thanks in advance. - - -- - - --------- Eric Nesbitt =================================== Randall Colgan, BSc.CE, EIT, CET, MCSCE Superintendent of Public Works, Parks, & Utilities Shaunavon, Saskatchewan =================================== == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 14:25:45 EDT From: TonyDePaul Subject: Re: FTE Pre61 - Brake System for 1950 Ford F-1 Pickup. The last time I drove the old truck was 24 years ago. I have invested a lot of love, money and time in the old beast. That is 2 years ago I began the restoration. I didn't realize the nightmare of finding new Brake Drums for the front wheels only. I have contacted old Ford parts distributors from North Caroline, Oklahoma City, Fort Bragg, and Long Island. Is it really a fact that front Brake Drums are a rare find if found at all. I have been quoted prices ranging from $59.00 to $100.00 for each Drum. Well... it appears to me that the price isn't the issue......where can I find the Brake Drums for the 1950 Ford F-1 Pickup??????
