Stauffer" Subject: FTE Pre61 - Bed Wood Help me out here folks: As I was getting red oak bedwood from a local woodworker, he told me an old sawmill operator he gets wood from told him the wood Ford used on the mid-fifties pickups was yellow pine not oak. Can anyone confirm this? I assumed it was oak because that's what everyone sells and it is known for its strength and durability. He said yellow pine is less resistant to rot than oak. What do you think. I think I will get a piece of my old bed wood underneath the metal plate someone put on my truck bed and try to identify it. I just got this truck about 10 days ago, have tuned it up, fixed exhaust, re-wired taillights, fixed the brakes, and now it runs like a charm and I am ready to drive her. Problem is, NO BRAKE LIGHTS!!! As I said before, I rewired them, and headlights and turn signals work fine, but still NO BRAKE LIGHTS!!! I REALLY would like to start driving this truck immediately, but can't do it until I have brake lights! I don't think it is the switch (on front of master cylinder), because I had brake lights sometimes before I rewired the back end. PLEASE HELP. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kindof working blind here, as have not found any shop manuals for this year model truck either! Anyone else out there drive one of these classy looking machines? Thanks in advance. Abe, My 61 had yellow pine, weather it came with it or not is the question. I have a board from my 54, however I havn't had time to idenify it. I don't think it is the switch (on front of master cylinder), Bud, The turn singals and the brake lights are the same lights. I would highly suspect the switch, or possibly a problem with the trun singal switch. Short the wires on the brake light switch, if you get lights its the switch. Hansen" Subject: [none] I did put a 12 volt starter and a 12 volt Generator on my '50 F-1 V-8, but before I start wiring it I will get a alternator set up instead of the generator. My concern was the points and condenser, I didn't want to burn them out. After a bit of research I found that the points and condensed was the same part number as a mid-50's year, after they converted to 12v. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 17:56:01 -0400 From: gvanderg Subject: FTE Pre61 - 12V Conversion Thanks all for the information on the 12V upgrade of my '37. What does the ignition ballast resistor do? If it is just voltage drop before the coil? If I upgrade to a 12V coil do I still need a ballast resistor? Is there electronic iginition for a flatty? Prior to that there was wood covered by a big ol' hunk of sheet metal. Apparently the wood got so bad in my '51 that the previous owner just tack welded a sheet over it. Close enough. As to the original question, I bet you do have to remove the sheet metal to replace the wood. No experience, tho. The ones I have right now are incomplete and I will like to replace them. I've seen the ones advertised in "Classic Trucks" magazine (Juliano's) but I can't afford the whole set right now. I went to the junkyard the other day hoping to find a good set, but I didn't find anything good. What will be an excellent donor vehicle for something like this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
