Subject: FTE Pre61 - Re Stuck Valves

Valves on pre48 and post 48 engines are different,

The pre 48's use a mushroom headed valve and a split guide, the later
engines use a straight stem valve and one piece guide. The later ones
can be pulled up and out of the guide, the earlier ones cannot.

I have a 52 Ford F-1, I'm pretty sure the plank set up is the same, but
to take mine out, I took a logging spike, you could use an awl, or a
punch too, and I'd hit in the center of the plank. This would knock out
a piece of oak from the center, and then you can pull the planks out by
grabbing in the middle where the space is, and pulling inward. I didn't
have any damage to the metal in my bed this way. It's fast and easy too.
