I believe the proper technique is to take your measurement at the front edge of the rims, while laying on your back, then take another measurement at the back edge of the rims, and subtract the difference. Somewhere, probably in one of the above books, I saw a diagram showing this done with a couple of carpenter's squares c-clamped to a 2x4. The make the rear measurement easier. unfortunately, I cannot tell you that I have ever actually done this. Ken, maybe we should find that truck restorer that is "borrowing" those pics and some of us with older, slower, less powerful trucks can draw and quarter him! Did I say that? Don N. '54 F-250 Named Grover ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 1997 08:42:24 -0800 From: "Jack Sturgis" Subject: Reply to Wax The prevailing attitude on wax with silicone is solid. The silicon actually penetrates the paint and, if used for a long period of time, can actually penetrate all the way into the metal. If there is ever the chance that you might repaint (a complete paintjob, graphics, falmes, pinstriping, rock chips....) silicon is the primary cause of fisheyes, something you don't want in your paintjob. Stay away from any product that contains silicon, unless you're "detailing" your evil mother-in-law's broomstick. I've gotten a couple more from junk yards and they're not much better. They had problems with contacts and the lights would go out while driving down the road -- not good. I finally put a headlight relay under the dash so only a little current goes through the switch. That's worked great. You'll find that there are a lot of things hard to find for a '60. I think it's because lots of people restore 54-56's, and not nearly as many restore 57-60's. So people don't make repo parts, or bother with NOS stuff for 57-60's. Be persistent and snap things up when you can. I've been looking for a stock oil-bath air cleaner for mine for about 15 years. Saw one once at a swap meet but the guy wanted more than I wanted to pay. At this point I'd pay twice what he wanted for it. Also, check with Ford on things. I've been surprised sometimes at what they can still order. The web site is: www.73-79 fordtrucks. com It turns out that he also stole the graphic from the Big Bronco page. I'm sure they'll take action since they are hosted by Offroad.com (a huge site with money to back themselves up). I've notified the vice-president of Offroad about this copyright violation. In fact, I was told that there was some problem with the way that the headlight switch was made in 1960. I've checked with Sacramento, Macs, Narragansett, and a couple of other places with no success. Does anyone know why 1960 is such a bad year (is it because of the light switch?), and does anyone have any suggestions? i,m not sure what yur problem is but i have a 59+58 and if you give me a call off line i'll see what i can do. they are the same. or can be. Merry Christmas, Y'all, Don N. '54 F-250 Named Grover geez, don. i'm not sure how it will be in kentucky. while i'm at the beach this weekend i'll get a paper and let you know. truth is, even here in the golden state, when the wind blows off the gulf of alaska(even sounds cold, don't it) we all get hard nipples. but you know you haven't lived till you pulled a tranny or did a brake job when yur fingers were so cold you could warm 'em up with ice water. this is what we call experience and you know as well as i that there's only one way to get it. watched my daughter stand out in the 36 degree weather and 40mph wind last night for 2 hours putting a new master cylinder on her 68 firebird. she had it done pretty fast but then she learned that even the new parts they sell you at the auto store are sometimes just pieces of junk so she had to do it twice. would have let her use my garage but it's full with one of my truck projects right now. i did let her use my tools and had plenty of coffee and look at the great knowledge i passed along for free. although she can cuss like her old man she took great pride in the job when it was finished. just good old experience. only one way to get it.....
