I am restoring a 1950 F2 flatbed flathead. The local engine shop wants $2200 for a total engine rebuild, pistons, turn crank etc. My question is, isn't this a bit excessive ? Does anyone have quotes from other areas I can compare this to ? (this is only for the short-block by the way...) Thanks, Tony ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 11:05:57 -0600 From: Jeff Hazewinkel Subject: Re: F2 Flatbed Flathead When I first was investigating having my flathead rebuilt those were the numbers I was seeing. I received price quotes from three sources for parts and the lowest for parts was about $1400 and labor would not take long to add up to over $2000. I ended up buying a rebuilt engine for $1000 from another source, the only catch was that the rebuilt engine came with another truck to restore. anthony g moore wrote: > > Greetings from the frozen north! The most important part is to make sure the block is rebuildable, the old flatheads have been subjected to a lot of HOT abuse over the years. Quotes I have received range from 3-8K, depending on the level of motor you want to build. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 17:31:08 -0800 From: "Paul G." Subject: Horn Button ID I just wondered if anyone knew anything about my horn button off of my 55 panel...it is mostly black, with the script "ford" with 5 horizontal stars above it. I never saw one like that before. Isn't this a silly question? What the heck, it's winter anyway. Paul. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 17:35:36 -0800 From: "Paul G." Subject: Power Steering add-on Ref the PS subject, I also installed the "add on" kit from SoCal. The instructions really sucked, as the other guy said, they were a poor copy of a magazine article installing on a Chevy. You'd think for over $500, those jerks would at least xerox a Ford article, OR: how about sitting down for about an hour and really do a comprehensive page of directions? The kit went on easy, with the new tie rod, etc, but all my PS hose connectors except the one I had to assemble leaked constantly until I added an "o" ring and thread sealer. Canter has a rebuild kit for about $600 (www.kanter.com) I've ordered parts from these guys and am very happy with the service and quality. And with the experts on this list, You should be able to get your questions answered.
