Epidemics of silicosis have occured repeatedly in the US since the 1890's. Sand-blasting with crystalline silica is one of the potentially most hazardous occupations for silicosis risk. In the early 1980's rising oil prices led to a production boom in the Permian Basin, and West Texas sandblasters were employed to capacity preparing pipes tanks and manifolds. Working conditions were extremely dusty (breathing zone air samples recorded respirable free silica between 400-700 g/m3), little or no respiratory protection was used, and sand was continually recirculated until it was too fine to be no longer useful. Although abrasive blasting with crystalline silica has been banned in most industrialized nations for several decades, its use is still permitted in the US and Canada. As a result, numerous unfortunate heavily exposed workers have developed accelerated silicosis (an uncommon type of silicosis developing after very heavy exposure). The prognosis for accelerated silicosis is often of progressive disease, even after exposure ceases. A few have died, and several of them have had lung biopsies, which have been the subject of studies. Silicosis is fibrosis and scarring of the lungs caused by breathing silicon dust. (powdered sand or sand dust..) It's not a nice thing and You need to wear good respiration gear when sandblasting. It's got nothing to do with silicone, which is different than silicon. Silicon is a non metallic element with the symbol "Si". Silicone is R2SiO where "R" is an organic group... Could I get a few suggestions as to the rearend I should use. I would like to upgrade to a stronger posi unit for my 55' panel. I think since I'm switching engines (150hp? stock to 350 or a bit more, it would be smart to get into this. Would simply pulling the pumpkin out and getting new gears be ok or to be on the safe side go out and get a used chevy 12 bolt posi, redoit w/ rear/disc brakes and use that? The truck when done will be around 6500 lbs and I want to be sure I don't spit out the rear end one day. Any opinion or suggestion is greatly appreciated. A late 70's, early 80's Mark series Lincoln had the discs and while I'm not sure about the width, It should be pretty close. Kent, I`m using a 9" truck rear from a 72 f100 with 75-79 linclon rear discs in a 56 f100. The width lets the tires sit just in side the fenders with 8" rims and a 7" backspace. The truck is powered by a 427 Ford med riser and handles all the abuse I give it. I would stay with a 9" just for gear availabilty.
