It is in my 47 pickup however I have a sneaking suspicion that it is a 48 or 49 motor. I seem to remember something about the water pump location and head bolt caps vs. bolts being different. Thanks in advance, Pat == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info http://www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Feb 1999 14:14:16 -0500 From: "Pat Hester" Subject: FTE Pre48 - alternator bracket for flathead Does anyone know a supplier for a bracket to install an alternator on a flathead??? I am also wishing to install a disc brake conversion on my 47 pickup (retaining the stock front suspension) Does anyone know of a good supplier they have used? I am aware of a few, I am just not sure which one to deal with. Thanks in advance. Thanks in advance, Pat" The 42 to 47 motor may be identified by a "59A-B" cast into the head, also a "59" cast on the bell housing, the water connections to the heads are halfway back on the heads and cast as part of the heads, and the distributor is on the front of the engine. The 48-53 motor (used from 49 to 53 in the cars) is referred to an 8BA engine (many of the parts had an 8BA prefix on the number) and can be recognized because the water outlet connections are bolted onto the front of the head on each side of the engine, and the dist is on the side of the engine at the front. If you cannot recognise it from this it is a pre 42 engine and you will need to get me the numbers cast on the back of the block, and count the number of head bolts (21 bolts for pre 39 and 24 bolts for 39 and later). The most obvious indications are where the hoses from the heads to the radiator are. Between 1937 and 1948 they come out of the middle of the head. 1949-1952 they are at the front of the head. Also, before 1949 the distributor was right on the camshaft while in 1949 and later the distributor was connected by a shaft and should be visible by the passenger side head.
