Thanks to Shane and Kevin for their input.

Shane, the carb was purchased new, and, yes, the plug is installed in the
back of the carb (I double checked just to be sure), but I am in fact
running less than 17" according to my vacuum gauge. I have disconnected and
plugged all vacuum accessories and still am around 15.5". The intake
manifold is new as well, and I don't find any leaks at any gaskets, so. . .
hmmm???

Kevin, the idle mix was adjusted according to Edelbrock's directions.  I
didn't get a chance to tinker with it any more this weekend, but will try
your suggestion re: less advance at idle & adjusting the curve. That could
be contributing to the problem. As with most of these drivablility problems,
I expect it is a combination of factors.

I'll continue to chase this down; I appreciate your suggestions.
