It worked ok, but when I went through it and freshend it up a lil, I went with the Lunati cam. I'm leaning towards one of two Lunati grinds: I went with the Lunati and was very happy, it had the "lopey" idle that was a little rough and it operated my power brakes just fine. I believe the lift was .554 with a duration of 232. The part number was 0054. If I were to build me another 390, I would put another one in it. They also have another one #0053 which is almost the same except it has a smoother idle. If you are interested in those cams, I think they were called the "Bracket Master". I have owned my truck for over 20 years and I'll tell you it never stops........ LOL, this is true, now I'm workin on getting the interior started, having trouble finding some door panels and a headliner. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am planning on swapping out the 351M for either a 429 or a 460 (essentially the same motor only different crankshafts) in the next couple of weeks. Does anyone know if I have to change torque converters and bell housings also? Is there anything else I need to change out for this motor swap? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html ------------------------------ From: "Bill Beyer" <bbeyer Subject: Re: 351M to 429 Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 14:52:09 -0800 You don't need to change torque converters, you can't change bell-housings but you don't need to. You'll need to buy motor mounts and some type of exhaust manifolds or headers that will work with the swap since there weren't any 385 series motors in 78 4X4s. Expect to spend $300-$500 for the swap parts alone. /// Friends help you move...Real friends help you move bodies \\ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeff Miller" <Baywatch13 To: <perf-list Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2000 1:46 PM Subject: [perf-list] 351M to 429 > Hi folks, > I have a 1978 Bronco with a "sick" 351M motor and an automatic C-6 > transmission. It doesn't address the exhaust issues however and it's over $300 with shipping. My personal opinion is that unless you have a rebuilt 429/460 that you've already bought or rebuilt then I'd spend the $300 turning my 351M into a 400 and not worrying about converting. /// Friends help you move...Real friends help you move bodies \\ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob" <xavetarx To: <perf-list Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2000 3:07 PM Subject: [perf-list] Re: 351M to 429 > Bill, check out this website for your swap... > > http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://performanceunlimited.com/customproducts/enginemount.html > > -bob- ------------------------------ From: Kevin Kemmerer <kevkem Subject: Re: 351M to 429 Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 18:43:40 -0500 Although I don't like dealing with them, L&L products has the mounts also. I just got a 460 in my 79 Bronco, and I'm having a heck of a time beefing up the drive train. I've gone through two universals in two weeks. I have a 14 bolt GM rear (One Ton) and I'm going to convert the drive shaft so the whole set up will be one ton. Once this is done, I'm looking to tear some MUD up. You'd be amazed at the difference between the 351/400 (my other Bronco has a 400) and the 460. -bob- ------------------------------ From: "Bill Beyer" <bbeyer Subject: Re: 460 destroys the drive train :-) Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 18:09:14 -0800 Well I didn't say to put a STOCK 400 back in it. All I'm saying is that if I'm going to take the time and $$$ to rebuild an engine I can make a 400 go almost as good as a 429 and spend the $300+ dollars to make it better. Like I said, if Jeff already has a rebuilt 429/460 ready to go then fine, spend the $300+ and stuff it in the bronco. But if he has to buy a new motor and then rebuild it then he can put the $300 towards making the 351M into a 400 and making it bark. So what exhaust did you use for your conversion anyway? /// Friends help you move...Real friends help you move bodies \\ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob" <xavetarx To: <perf-list Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2000 6:13 PM Subject: [perf-list] Re: 460 destroys the drive train :-) > for 300 bucks.
