Don't discount the 2.9 right away in favor of another engine. Sure, I would
love to have a 5.0 in my bronco 2 because of the wide availability of hop-up
parts, but since I live in California and this is my daily driver, I have
chosen to stick with the 2.9 for right now. The small engine can really move
the bronco alright. I wouldn't tow anything with it, but she is reliable as
hell and very quick in her own right.

I have to pass smog in early december, but after that my new cam and lifters
from cam craft is going in. (260/272 intake/exhaust) They say that it can
and will pass smog, but I want to make sure I pass this year and get at
least two good years of cam fun before the next smog test.

With the mods I have in her right now, 31" tires, 4.10 gearing, detroit
locker, 3" Suspension and 2" body lift and I have smoked EVERY 4.0 that I
have ever come across. He he he. Rangers and Explorers alike. Granted that
every one of these engines has been bone stock, but it still feels nice to
listen to the competition "talk the big talk" and then be smoked.

There is no replacement for displacement, and the 4.0 is just bigger than my
2.9, but a well maintained 2.9 can hold it's own. I wouldn't mind owning a
4.0 to work up, but in California they are as expensive as a 5.0.

I run a "built" 2.9 in my 1988 Bronco 2. I will take engine shots for anyone
who is interested.

I can't wait to get the cam in. Oh boy oh boy oh boy.

So what mods do you have to the engine ?  Any ?  It sounds from that desc. that
you're just beating them because of gearing ?

Just my $.02

Hey Wish,

For that comment, you deserve a ride!! Then you'll see why the CA4WD wants me to
get a roll cage and five point harnesses.

I gassed her up tonight before responding to this email. I get 19 MPG in the city,
and 23 in the highway.

Let's see, I know I am leaving something out, but I'll try to name what has been
done.

Engine compression, 165 to 170 on the third stroke of every cylinder.
Oil Pressure, 60 PSI at 1500 RPM, 20 at hot idle. Red Line Oil, 10W-30.
Completely new EFI system. Every sensor or controller has been replaced.
I cut the air box off, and stuck a K and N cone on the end of that. There is a 58
MM throttle body on the upper intake, and the lower intake has beed ported to the
heads. The fuel rail pressure is raised to 45 PSI, and the injectors are ADS Super
Injectors for a higher flow rate. The coil is a MSD Blaster. The ignition system is
a MSD 6A, wires being MSD Super Conductors, and the plugs champion truck plugs. The
heads have been rebuilt, and the exhaust ports have been machines to match the JBA
headers bolted onto them. The JBA headers feed down to a Flowmaster Series 50
muffler, which exists through a 2.5" pipe. The computer chip has been reprogramed
to accompany all of this stuff via James Duff. The radioator is from a 4.0 Super
Cool, with an electric fan bolted on to it. Dual Friction Centerforce clutch, and a
whole lot of new stuff.

Every fluid is a synthetic one.

In use the Fm146 Transmission because the first and second gears are pretty low.
They are great for four wheeling too.

Pat Kunz and I think she can do 210 HP, but I can't wait for the cam. Oh Boy Oh Boy
Oh Boy.
