Heh...heh...I think I have the answer to your mystery part for you. If this was the first time this tranny has been apart you could be looking at the plug which is put in during assembly of the transmission prior to the dipstick/tube being installed after the tranny is in the vehicle. When the dipstick tube is installed the plug is simply pushed into the tranny and stays in the pan until the first service where the technician usually removes it and tosses it. I used to work at a Ford dealership and saw many of these plugs.
