I'm bracket drag racing a 92Ranger 2.3L for the quarter mile. It has the standard 5speed manual transmission, and a 3:45(limited slip?I think) rear, and 24.5 inch rear tires as measured with the trucks weight on them. My question is this. If I lower the diff gear ratio to whatever? can I lower my ET? Could this lowering be the result of a faster launch? Maybe not on the current street radials, but I would be willing to change wheels and tires as needed to radial street drag tires if needed. Or more likely, in the current configuration I'm completing the quarter mile in 3rd gear. Could I make that fourth gear? With the tach light set at about 4800rpm: 1st gear is about 25mph 2nd gear is about 44mph 3rd gear is about 65(I go a little over shift point here and finish at 69mph) If I lowered my rear gears and could then use four of my five tranny gears would I lower my ET? In a recent highway test I wanted to see what 4800rpm would look like in mph in 4th gear, but my speedo only goes to 85mph. I reached 85mph at about 4300rpm with the current 3:45 rear gears. With this data can someone determine if I would be able to improve my quarter mile ET by changing diff gear ratio? How low can I go before my 1st gear becomes a somewhat useless Granny gear? I don't use the truck for anything other than drag racing, so towing, mileage etc. any dowside in all other directions is pretty meaningless, for this exercise. I just drive it to the strip once a week and that's about it. Also according to the New Car window sticker when I bought this truck in 9/92 it listed it as having a Limited Slip Differential. When I do a burn out test and look at the tire patch, I see that I'm just burning with the right rear wheel. Shouldn't I be spinning both rear wheels, if all is well with the limited slip? Or am I misunderstanding what Ford means by their limited slip? ET may drop from the better start, but the trap speed may not change much. overall, if it was me, i'd try a test if i had some extra tires around. run a smaller dia tire to simulate the gear change in the diff. maybe could give you an idea of what it can do for you. being that it is bracket racing though, consistancy is important. will another shift at the end of the track reduce consistancy? just a few thoughts, take em for wahtever they are worth to yuo. - ---------- From: Tom Ewing[SMTP:ewing Sent: Saturday, August 21, 1999 5:40 PM To: perf-list Subject: FTE Perf - differential gearing Maybe some of you gear ratio folks could give me a hand.
