I need some more power and I'm looking at cams.
Anybody have any tips on selection?

My motor is set up as follows:

85 5.0 non-roller
Holley 600 vac secondary
Performer intake
Stock heads (will remain so)
Headers
Dual exhaust w/crossover and Dynomax mufflers
Duraspark II ignition
3.70 gears in a 9" rear
C4 automatic

I started looking at the Performer cam but I think I
can do better for less money. I like the Isky mega
cams. I want the truck to have a noticeable idle and
good power and be ok with the stock converter. Don't
want an RV cam, something with power to match the
intake's range of idle - 5,500. How does the lobe sep
angle affect idle and torque? The Isky's are gound on
a 108deg centerline and the Performer is 112deg.
What's the difference?

well your lobe center does alot.. it determines you intake vaccum and
erraticness of the cam with a 108 lobe center i doubt the truck will even
idle in gear without a stall.. or even operate your vaccum brakes... i would
stay away from a cam liek that... especially if you arte going to run stock (
not modified heads) while the performer is more twards a factory style cam
you will see a small gain and keep all of your factory characteristics..

The brakes are manual/ 4wheel drums plus the anchor
that I have to throw out at every stop light.heheheh.

I would like a lopey idle, not choppy and not stock
style. Would a 110deg centerline be better for the
stock converter in that case? PAW sells their cams in
108 110 112 113 114 for my 302. I'm shooting for
about 14.3 93 performance. I've made some mods lately
that knocked about .5 sec off the ET so I'm looking to
kind of pull everything together (with the stock
heads). Is .7 sec ET reduction out of the question
with a cam install and valve job, considering the rest
of the mods on the motor?

Thanks for the help.
