Subject: FTE Perf - Another Dana 60 question

A couple of days ago I posted a message to this group regarding putting
a '77 Dana 60 into my '54 F250. One of you mentioned the wheelbase of
the '77 is wider. What is that measurement?

I'm not real sure about the WB, but I know that from '73 up the frames are
about 3.5" wider. I'm pretty sure the WB was widened a like amount.
Evidently FORD did this to accomodate the tank in the frame.

A side note:
ALL the frames I've measured from '40-'72 are the same width at the rear.

Yo Josh:

AFAIK, beginning in the 1986 model year, all F250s and F350s used the Ford
corporate 10.25" axle in the rear, not a Dana unit.

You can get a chrome diff cover for the Dana 60 at almost any auto parts store
and all the mail order speed shops have them for about $20. Ford Motorsports
has (had) a chrome diff cover for the 10.25" axle for about $25-30. Some
aftermarket outfits might have chrome covers for the Ford axle now, too.

You can get a fancy cast aluminum diff cover for both the Dana 60 and Ford
10.25" from Off Road Unlimited
http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.offroadunlimited.com/ for $110-140 each (depending on whether you
want plain, black, or polished).

I've seen ads in the main 4x4 rags for Dana 60 girdles for around $150 or so.
Seems like they advertise in just about every issue, but I can't remember the
OEM name right now. You can get an axle girdle for the Dana 60 from Ford
Motorsports (has the SVO logo!) for about $175. I don't know if anyone makes a
girdle for the Ford 10.25" axle.

Good luck w/ your truck.
