(Putting on my baked potato suit) After 100,000 miles of running and then re-machining it, it may be capable of holding together. I think a lot of M-block troubles are due to the fact that the castings were put into service "green." I'd bet that the stress-relieving that comes with years of running could possibly cure a few things that gave these engines trouble, provided that they can be remachined back into shape. The early 385-series got a bad rap for the same things, so Ford added some nickel. It's too bad they didn't do it to the M also. But, seasoning a casting makes it much stronger as long as it's heated and cooled properly. On an M (or any other low-nickel thinwall casting) if it's been hot, throw it away. If (when) you sound it, if you find any core shift, get another block. They don't need to be bored any more than necessary, the less the better. If it's bored oversize at all and has any taper, toss it. If you wanted to you could sleeve it. If I were building 500hp in one, that's what I'd do to take the bores out of the equation. There's nothing you can do about the decks, just hope for the best. Power potential has never been a problem with these engines (they have the best head design on the planet), it's been stamina. But as I've said here, time may have helped matters a little. Finding a perfect block and putting it into shape is (and has always been) the key to building an M. - -- Come on over to my Back Porch http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.ldd.net/scribers/ballingr Ballinger ballingr == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Aug 1998 11:22:02 EDT From: Trs2000 Subject: FTE Perf - 66f100 ps/pb conversion I wanted to thank everyone again for all the great advice. My 66 f100 ps/pb conversion is almost complete. I found a ps pump for my 352 out of a pile of pumps in the 500 range. Wow! I bolted it up and found out I could use the lines off of the 73f150 parts I have. I only have a couple of things left to complete the changeover. I have to change the bottom pulley/balancer for a double pulley system. Does anyone know if this could hurt the bottom end? I found one that looks identical as the stock single pulley but has two. Also, I need to wire up the steering column cause the connectors are different. The color coding is also slightly different? I was hopeing I could match up as much as I could and the rest would maybe me later model options. Anyway, thanks everybody. I'll post when I'm rollin'...........
