I'm looking for any information on performance parts for my new F150. Are there even any part available for it yet? I bought a 1998 4x2 a few months ago and would like to beef up the suspension by adding a rear sway bar and harder bushings. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance... Forbes" Subject: FTE Perf - Re: 53 F250 motor Hello Troy, I am interested in what you have as an original motor. Is it a flattie or a Yblock? Either one, please don't just scrap it. Pull it carefully (and the tranny) and sell it at a swap meet. The antiques are getting harder to find for restorers, especially cast parts like manifolds. Too many youngsters (no slam intended) are just junking the old parts and forgetting about the rest of us (maybe we are antiques, too!) in the hobby who need parts. Many times swap meets are the only places to find such motors and those who buy always recycle unused parts thru the hobby for use rather than the scrap yard for pig iron. Watch your paper or clubs for local meets or if you really get crazy , you could go to a monster meet like Carlisle. Swap meets also swap parts (duh!). No fear of getting gypped if both parties are brother enthusiasts and come home with what they need for their projects Please consider this approach to parts hounding and spread the philosophy among your peers Thanks from all of us!! I'm guessing but I'd say if you keep it below the boiling point and below it's flash point then hotter is better. 180 seems to be the magic number from what I've read so far but another thing you could try is a good synthetic ATF. I'm going to try AMSOIL soon in my daughters truck and the bird. Since you have an F-150 with the 460, does the big > block use different motor mounts than the 302. I do not have a big > block handy to look at to see how things are different. Once again, > thanks for the information. Ford has mounts for it but they are very expensive. All the guys swear by the $99 L&L mounts which are the engine part and bolt directly to the chassis part with no modification. I made my own mounts but would have bought the L&L versions if I had known about them at the time. Everything about the big block is more massive than the 302 in every direction. It will fill up your engine bay pretty nicely :-) 78 F-150, 2wd, 460, C-6, 235's 78 Bronco 351M, Np 435, Np 205, 33's 78 Lincoln Town Car, 460, C-6, 19.5' long! 9000#, in ground vehicle lift, Woooo Hooo! - -- Gary -- == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jun 1998 10:28:40 -0400 From: Sleddog Subject: RE: FTE Perf - 460 Cam ULTRADYNE CAMS:601-349-4447 have fun. and explain to any co that just because it is a tryuck don't mean it is supposed to be slow. if that was the case during prohibition most of the alcohol wouldn't of made it to the people! sleddog - ---------- From: Jim Craig[SMTP:jcraig Sent: Monday, June 22, 1998 11:34 PM To: perf-list Subject: FTE Perf - 460 Cam Thanks, Sleddog. Max power at any cost? Then put it in a Pinto, huh? Try an Audi 4000, the suspension lends itself to modification better, but hood clearance isn't gonna happen :-) I've been talking to the cam companies about their preferences, but I like your idea better--take their reccommendation and go half a step above! Besides, as soon as they hear the words "daily driver" and "truck" together in the same sentence, they immediately goto a cam focused primarily on low-end torque. The machine shop is building my motor within the next 2 weeks and I want to get a cam. I'm not really comfortable making a decision because I know practically nothing about cams and have had even less experience with different ones. I'm trying to absorb as much info as possible so I can come to an informed discussion. The motor is a 390 originally out of a '68 Fairlane. It was 2v but I have a Ford 4v manifold and an E-brock 600cfm carb. The stock cam would have been .253 lift. I don't have a duration spec for it. I'm not doing anything too radical to the motor. It will probably be bored and run 9.5:1 pistons which also would have been stock compression. I'm running automatic transmission with 3.54:1 rear end. I just want plenty of overall power across the entire rpm range (1000-5000 rpm.). I'm looking to be able to both tow stuff into the mountains if I need to, and blast onto the highway quick and run 95 mph if I need to. The truck will mostly be driven in town for awhile too. One guy I talked to mentioned that all I need is more duration. I know what this is but what does more of it do? Another friend said he had an RV cam in his '68 360 and it did what I am asking mine to do. I did drive it before he sold it and it really hauled a**, though he was running a 3 speed too. Just what is an RV cam? Thanks. Any help or suggestion or experiences will be appreciated. Though I trust my machinist, I'd hate to take only his recommendation and be disappointed later.
