I would think some where around 15-16 mpg. You have toremember the
trucks weight I have a 94 Lightning(reg cab short bed) and it weighs in
at about 4300-4400lbs, yours is an extended cab so it probably weighs
more! If you want more power off the line changed your gears to 4.10 but
this will hurt your gas mileage!

Dunno about yours, but I'd like to hear what others are getting with my
setup: 1994 Ford F-250 4wd, exended cab, 351, auto, K&N filter, runs
super. Best I can do is 10-11 mpg combined (not much better on the
highway). Is this normal?

That engine is rated at around 200HP w/less than 300ft lbs of torque and
you're moving close to 5,000 lbs of truck. It's not going to to give you
impressive launches no matter how well it's tuned.

it sounds very good. took out the water restrictor though. hope to get it
cooler yet. the elect. water pump is not flowing enough perhaps. now it
may be too much - will find out though!

it has a definate rap-rap-pop-pop sound that seams to come from everything
i ever heard with a ultradyne roller. idles nice at 1,000 rpms but idle
moves around too much to keep it there as when it drops under 1,000, it
wants to die. with a set of big flowmasters or borlas i could hide the
power enough that most people would easily beleive it is a decent sized
hydraulic cam. with no mufflers i think most wouls swallow a mid sized
solid cam.

if i started in the garage, i'd be deaf . . . .of course it would be nice
if i could fit it in the garage!

That's great. If it stabilized at 190 with no run-in, you couldn't ask for
a
better operating temp without a load. Is there a finer sound than that
first
blast out the headers from a 385 you did yourself? Maybe, but not in the
garage.

I have the same setup in a '95 model. Typically just over 16MPG in mixed but
mostly highway driving.

A real slug, huh? Don't I know. Been that way since new. Anyone know of
anything (short of replacing the engine with something bigger) that will help the
302 a bit on the low end, without making big sacrifices on the high end where this
motor really starts to shine? I think gutting the cat (illegal) would help.
Underdrive pulleys would probably also.

The heads on the 302 are reported to be a bottleneck, but most aftermarket heads
are designed to build power at higher revs. Of course I wouldn't mind this, but I
don't want to go to the trouble and expense of replacing them only to find that
the meager low-end torque that I had is gone and I have to get out and push it to
get it going!

One head that I'm aware of that was designed for TRUCK applications is the new
GT-40P head that Ford developed in '96. This head is in production 5.0L
applications of the Explorer (couldn't get that ultra-widebody OHC engine in
there). They also have a different intake manifold. Anyone have (or driven) one
of these? Is the low-end torque improved?

I ran across iron GT-40 heads for $150 (bare) a while ago. $200 302 blocks.
Seemed pretty cheap. Don't know how a GT-40 (non "P") would work in the truck
application. A supercharger would probably work well, but expen.

I've NOW figure that I'm getting circa 12 mpg around town. I thought that
that was pretty poor for a 302 cid.

This is one reply that I received regarding my '94 F-150 Supercab 4x2 LWB
equipped with the 302 cid/5.0 liter engine and 4 speed auto transmission.

But - - I just today received the new license plate and registration for this
truck from the NM MVD. The weight shown on the registration is 3,200 pounds.
Could that be right?
This subscriber mentions "close to 5,000 lbs of truck" certainly a large
discrepancy. Which weight is right for this truck?

I don,t think my K&N filter is going to last a million miles as K&N
claims, but I believe it's
a quality product that is worth the money.
I used to have a 1 1600 Desert racing buggy w/ K&N on it .After a 500
mile race you tap
it on the garage floor to knock the big stuff off & reinstall it. We
would clean & re-oil it at the
end of the season. At the time (8yrs. ago) Iwould say 90% of the cars
on the track ran K&Ns
but I don't think any of them had Splitfires or Miracle Engine Treatment
installed. Being as K&N
didn't have a contigency program the only reason we used them is because
they work.
