Am I starting with the right engine and does anyone have > any advice or sugguestions. All the brackets , PS, AC, Air Pump, ect. are > still intact. When finished my truck it will still have to pass emissions. Most states require you to smog the engine to it's spec or the chassis which ever is newer so if you put the 460 in it will have to be EFI since that's all they had in 87 and since the 460 wasn't offered in your truck in that year it may be illegal anyway so check your laws before you buy anything. 76 was not a particularily good year, 68 - 71 or so were the best but they all run and can be made to run strong so they're all good. Post 78 engines need externally balanced flywheel like the 335 series though so don't mix them up. If you have to be smogged I'd suggest you get a newer EFI engine, 87 or newer and all computer stuff and harnesses and do it right. IMHO, there is no free lunch. Absolutely right, but to get more air flow you ADD additional surface with the SAME density. Bigger it definitely better in this case, bigger diameter or taller which ever enhances the inlet flow to the venturis the best but bigger, not more open or porous. You want the micron protection, just get more surface exposed to the air and you you will get the flow and still have the microns you want :-) Greed is the Creed of the Breed that did away with the Steed Visteon, Delphi..........:-( - -- Gary -- == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 10:25:46 -0400 From: Sleddog Subject: RE: FTE Perf - it's alive!... being in a general hurry, and feeling confidant in redline ass'y lube, and hating trying to get the destributer to line up again, i used the starter with no plugs in to prime it. put in plugs, cranked and she cranked for a little while and gave a nice cuople of fires. did that a few times before she started and stayed up. didn't run it over 3000. have a roller, so cam break in is no problem. warmed it up to about 180-190 i think. then shut it off. started it back up. it started gettin up to about 210-215. hosed the radiater a while to get it cooler and it appeared to start stabalizing at 190 or so. maybe i will need a slightly bigger hole in the restrictor to cool a little more. it will crank it over with ignition on, but i have it switched so i can turn it over, then hit ignition after it is up to cranking speed. starter turns it fine, but by hand after assy, the valvesprings made it VERY difficult to turn over (bar between flexplate bolts. sleddog - ---------- From: George[SMTP:maga55 Sent: Wednesday, August 12, 1998 11:39 PM To: perf-list Subject: Re: FTE Perf - it's alive!... He's looking for more power but not too much money. This is what we have planned. Port stock heads and lower intake, i dont think the intake needs much. 1.7 rocker arms 1.5" shorty headers cat-back the truck has 80k, should i gut the cats or leave em there. Are they that much of a restriction. No emissions to worry about. K&N filter set timing between 12 and 14 deg. shift kit, or custom chip Am i missing anything, or doing anything wrong? thanks in advance, Phil == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 18:09:42 -0700 From: "George" Subject: Re: FTE Perf - K&N Filters Can I interest you in a case or so of Miracle Engine Treatment or perhaps a set of Splitfire Plugs? Hello Everybody! I'm new to the subscription list and I am the proud new owner of a 1994 F-150 Supercab LWB 4x2 with This truck is equipped with a 302 cid/5.0 liter engine, an auto 4 speed transmission, and what I think (code 19) is a 3.55 axle ratio. What should the expected range for gas mileage be in this pickup? Also, I am quite surprised at how slow this vehicle is off the line. Until it reaches a speed of by the dealer and runs perfectly -- so does anybody have an idea? That's great. If it stabilized at 190 with no run-in, you couldn't ask for a better operating temp without a load. Is there a finer sound than that first blast out the headers from a 385 you did yourself? Maybe, but not in the garage.
