I think 3 is causing 1. If the engine is idling at 2000 then any brake
system will be hard pressed to hold it with an automatic. You should be
idling below 1000 more like 650 to 700. If you cannot make the carb idle
that low and don't want to replace it you could put a looser (higher stall
speed) converter in it.
