Actually Don,
You have given me some info on the disc brake conversion, but I wasn't sure
if I had a Dana 30 or 44. I think mine is the closed-knuckle axle. I am
pretty sure the chassis and suspension is all original. The only changes
that I saw when I bought the truck was the gas tank was moved and a step
side bed was put on. So, are there any distinct markings that would tell
me it is a Dana 44?

Usually there is a number cast on to the housing. Usually in the lower right

or left corner looking at the differential cover.

Finally got around to building a twin stock TC to get 2 low.
Got the linkages fabbed up, painted and installed. Took about 5 hours
total from start to finish. Had TC out at first which made it much
easier.

(Note hole in side of tunnel for TC shifter bolt access)

Here is the linkages.

There must be interlocks in the TC that will not allow for FWD only,
in high or low. It should be feasable, as idler assembly between front
output and rear ouput gears is always spinning, even in TC nuetral.

There should be a 44 cast into the housing. I think it is on the
gusset on the center section. Some were on the top of the center
section but might have only been in the later years. The Dana 30 was
way to light duty for a full size truck application.

Good luck

Being the 'Fordnatic' in the shop I always get ribbed about the location of
the oil filter on the late model 4x4 trucks (right behind the bumper on the
driver's side). The lightest of the comments are "I sure wouldn't go off-road > in that better idea!" (I contend that Ford owners are smart enough not to run
into things unlike the other drivers..) Seriously though; what kind of
impact does it take to disable the oiling system on a stock truck with the
filter in that forward position? There's bound to be some dented up and well
used late model 4x4s on this list that could shed some light on this question
and help me put down the Bow-tie guy and the Mopar guy.

New blazers have it in the same spot :o) at least the blazer that came into
the shop about a week or two ago (body shop) rear ended another car hard,
even frame damage, killed the radiatior and stuff, no oil leaked out of it,
the rubber lines allowed the filter and everything to sorta slide back in the
impact, this may have been luck, but i was surprised.

Subject: 4" Ranger lift, or was it a 5.5" lift

Howdy all. Been some pretty good conversation on the list lately I think.
Hopefully this will add to it a little. I recently installed a Superlift 4"
lift kit on my '96 Ranger 4X4. But, after installing the kit I noticed that
the camber was way off (out on the top). I drove it like this for a day or
two thinking that the springs would settle a little but they didn't, besides,
Superlift says their springs are pre-settled. So, I dropped the I-beams into
the 5.5" lift holes on the new brackets and it straightened everthing right
out. I know I got radius arm drop brackets for a 4" lift, but I'm thinking I
got coils for a 5.5" lift, but I'm not positive. So, my question is: Has
anyone put a Superlift 4" or 5.5" lift on their '93-'96 4X4 Ranger? Did you
have this same problem? And did you happen to measure how much taller the new
coils were from the stock coils? My new coils were a full 6" taller than my
stock coils, I figured that Superlift went with 2" to level the truck and
another 4" to lift it, is this right? Also, I got a 3.5" rear block lift
with my kit, I thought I was only supposed to get 2.5" blocks. Anyone who
can tell me what lift I have on my truck, I would greatly be appreciative of.
Thanks in advance.

PS: I measure before and after on the same spot front and back; the front
came out 6.5" taller and the back came out 3" taller.

I have a Skyjacker 6" Suspension lift on my truck and I had to do something
similar. I also dropped my brackets into the opposite holes that you would
think would need to be used, and it helped to straighten my truck out as
well. But I still had some sag to them, so I manufactured some special coil
spring seats to help to level out my truck and it rides perfect now. I took
it to a local 4WD specialty alignment shop and they had no problem getting
everything in perfectly for me. I didn't get blocks with my lift though. I
got a hole new leaf spring pack that I put in. Didn't measure what I had
originally but I am right at legal height now with the 33x12.5x15 Thornbirds
I am running on my truck. Rides nice and still has plenty of power, but I
plan on adding more soon.

Tim,

I had this system on my 97 and I wish I had it on my
00. With my 97 I hit hard enough to push the top of the
fenders into the doors. The doors wouldn't open and I had
to kick to get out. The frame had bent upwards causing the
damage. I contend that if you hit hard enough to push the
oil filter off its mount then you hit hard enough to
disable other components also. It is attached to the frame
for God's sake, it isn't going anywhere.

Regards

Jean Marc Chartier
