If your truck is the same as mine (and I think it is), the next step is to
remove the locking hub. With the large wire type C clip and the clip on the
end of the spindle removed, the locking hub should side right out. Look up
inside. You will see a C clip in front of the bearing retaining nuts. Remove
this and then remove the bearing retaining nuts. (you will need a special
spindle wrench for this one. I am now the proud owner of one after needing
one for the first time!) After the 2 nuts and one special washer are
removed, the hub will pull right off.

When reinstalling the hubs, I find it best to first tighten the first
retaining nut to about 50 ft lbs. to set the bearing, then loosen the nut
until just a slight movement in the bearing can be felt (or heard when you
bump the rotor with your hand. When the second retaining nut is tightened
(With that special washer properly installed in between), It will force the
first nut far enough ahead to take up the slack.

PS: My front end is a Dana 44. If yours is a 55, then my typing and your
reading may have been a waist of time! But anyway, Good luck!!

Last weekend was going to be "Truck" weekend, I had rounded up the
parts for
all the items on my fixit list. Passenger window drive gear, rotors for
front and pads all round, transmission filter etc. Done all the easy stuff
first then came the hard one. The front rotors are giving me a headache,
I've changed them on several 2x's with no problem but this is the first time
on a 4x4. I went out and looked it up in the Chiltons book. But I'm still
foggy on how to take off those #$% front hubs to replace the rotors.
Someone wrote that I could tap on the lug bolts (with lug nuts installed)
but I don't see how that would remove it. It is on my "90" F150 4x4 with
Auto locking hubs (towing package if that makes a difference). I think I
matched them up to the Dana 55? according to the diagram with gears and
various parts exploded in the book I could be wrong though. Is there another
way to verify which one I have? How far down do I have to remove to get it
off? I've taken the allen screws and cap, along with the spring and it's
clip off and still thought more needed to come out before I could remove
that outer plate. I can see that the outer plate needs to come off before
the rotor will come off. But what else do I need to do? HELP

You will need a special tool (called a Spindle Nut Wrench) for the front
hubs to remove one of the rings. It looks somewhat like a black steel cup
with teeth around the rim. I was lucky enough to find one at my Napa store
hanging on their tool rack. The package is marked, and should tell you what
application it is for. But, it won't tell you if it is for automatic or
manual hubs. This is where you need to look at your Chilton manual to make
sure you get the hub tool for automatic hubs not manual (there should be a
picture in the manual). They have different tooth locations. Once you get

this tool, the ring on your hub is VERY tight, (or at least should be). You
might need to use a braker bar with the hub tool to get it off. The only
tools I have seen only use a 1/2" socket. Make sure you have one (or a 1/2"
braker bar). Besides that, you can use simple tools to remove the rest of
the pieces. Just keep going until you can pull the rotor off. I have my
Haynes Manual here at work, which shows a very discriptive how to with
pictures. If you have a fax machine near by, I can send you the pages. I
know it is for a Ranger, but the application is the same. You just need
that one spindle nut wrench for your vehicle.

After removing the cap, turn the rotor til you find a little clip.
Remove it by pulling out using needle nose pliers. Then there is a
piece of wire on each side of the indentation that the clip came out
of. Squeeze them togethre and pull from the center of the unit and it
should slid right out. Next there is a huge nut that has 4 indentations
on it. You can buy a huge socket at the parts house to remove this. I
did, and its around 10bucks. But if you don't have access. using a
screw driver and hammer can work but can screw up the threds or the
nut. Remove it buy turning it couter-clockwise, just like any other
nut. Then there will be a spacer with many holes in it the size of the
nut. Remove that. Next there is another nut like the first one, and it
has to be removed the same way. Note that this nut has a small tit on
the front side. Be sure it goes back in that way and that when the
spacer goes on in front of it, that the tit sticks through. After
removing the final nut just slid it out and there you go. But of
course, don't forget to remove the brake caliper first of all..

Any more help, just let me know..

Hi, I was just wondering if the posting is still off track, I sent in a post on 5-08 and immediatly got it back on one dated for 5-06 , I never got 5-07 and didnt get 5-08 until 5-09 , so I guess another reason for this inquisition it to maybe receive 5-09 when I hit the send icon. Thanks , I enjoy all FTE has to offer, it is far and beyond the best automotive site I have seen.
