Has anyone done any Transmission work on a 96 Ford Explorer ? I have some
problems with it sticking in 2nd and 3rd gears.(Automatic Transmission),
plus I would like to know about some peformance kits for 4.0L Pushrod v6, I
know that this engine has been used in Explorer's mountaineers and Ranger
PU's. I want to see if I can get some more get up and go on that V-6.

To save the +$2,000 it would be to keep it a manual transmission.

I like chosing when to shift! I also like the car not deciding when to jump
gears on me! Makes for an unstable vehicle when you don't know what's going
on.

Mike, you have the Pretty Park trojan horse! Go to www.norton.com or
another reputable site and get info and something to kill it with. Luckily,
Listar stripped the binary so no one else became infected.

In short, this virus, once run, sends itself to everyone in your address
book. For those that have extensive address books (me, with about 700
entries) this can cause problems in a hurry.

Shorter wheelbase though if that changes anything in the equations..

Mostly glass and thin sheet metal; probably not as much weight as you might
think. I'd guess no worse than adding a cap to the bed of the Ranger.

> So under the same
> conditions, a BII would roll before a Ranger.

I'd tend to agree; I'll push a Ranger harder into a turn than my B-II. OTOH
during the evacuation from Hurricane Floyd I had to make a sharp evasive move
to avoid an idiot trying to merge into highway traffic (and not hit the
rapidly approaching Honda in the left lane!) The B-II handled it well, but
I'll admit to doing it quickly but SMOOTHLY.. had I just yanked the wheel hard
left 60 MPH who knows... As it was I got the finger and some curses from
the Honda, but that's preferable to plowing into an LTD or flipping into the
median! :-)

Hopefully not.. The rear windows in the B-II are expensive buggers!

And anybody watching!

The extra adapters are expensive! Plus the trannies are a bit weak for V-8
use.. :-( One of the reasons I'll stay with the V-6 in my B-II. (that and
the weird a$$ emission laws here..)

> From the offroading that I have done, I prefer clutches to auto's. I have
driven both, and just don't feel like I have the same control over the truck

Amen brother! Sometimes in mud or sand the truck slows quickly during the
shifting, but I'll take that annoyance over an unwanted downshift that breaks
my traction... Plus I can replace a lot of clutches myself for what a
professional tranny overhaul costs.

Since the 5.0 was never offered in the B-II it wont pass NC inspection if the
inspector's a tight-nose. Makes no sense to me.. a FI 5.0 would have to be
cleaner emission-wise than my rich running carb'd 2.8 but I didn't make the
laws..

P.S. If you happen to vacation at the beach in Wilmington NC and see a B-II
with a tire carrier reading "Manic Mechanic" honk the horn and give me a wave!

It's only in abrupt cornering especially of the back & forth type. Probably
wouldn't be an issue if Consumer Reports had never seen a Suzuki Samurai!
Rolls are a part of off-roading that we accept but do our best to avoid.
Llike snake bites or sink holes.. crap happens.. and often it's largely our
own fault. The only time I ever lifted a tire on my B-II I was doing three
stupid things at once. (A: BAC was way too high, B: I was mad, C: Driving
into corners like I was in the Capri due to A & B.. Glad I and the truck
survived my OOC jaunt.)

Self serve regular U-lead is $1.38-1.50 today (3-2-00); was a nickle less
yesterday; add about 15-20 cents for premium depending on the brand. I may
re-think my usual 2000 Mile round trip to Maine this summer if the prices keep
going up.

Forgive the cross-posting, but I thought that this would be of interest to both
lists. First of all, Ken, thanks for having everything configured nicely where
Listar trashed the binary file - you probably saved a few people some
headaches! And, for those that have the worm, here is the Norton Anti-Virus
information:

PrettyPark.Worm

Detected as:PrettyPark.Worm, W32.PrettyPark.C.Worm, W32.PrettyPark.D.Worm
Aliases:Trojan Horse, W32.PrettyPark, Trojan.PSW.CHV, CHV, W32/Pretty.worm.unp
Known Variants:W32.PrettyPark.C.Worm, W32.PrettyPark.D.Worm
Infection Length:37,376; 17,081 (C variant); 60928 (D variant)
Area of Infection:C:\Windows\System, Registry, email attachments
Likelihood:Common
Detected as of:June 1, 1999; February 2, 2000 (C variant); February 18, 2000 (D
variant)
Characteristics:Worm, PrettyPark.EXE, Files32.VXD
Norton AntiVirus users can protect themselves from this virus by downloading
the current virus definitions either through LiveUpdate or from the Download
Virus Definition Updates page.

Description
This worm program behaves similarly to Happy99 Worm. It was originally
spread by
email spamming from a French email address. The original report of this worm
was submitted through our exclusive Scan&Deliver system on May 28, 1999 from
France.
When the attached program file, PrettyPark.exe, is executed, it may display the
3D pipe screen saver. It also creates a file called files32.vxd in the
Windows\System directory and modifies the following registry entry value from
"%1" %* to files32.vxd "%1" %* without your knowledge:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\exefile\
shell\open\command
Once the worm program is executed, it tries to email itself automatically every
30 minutes (or 30 minutes after it is loaded) to email addresses registered in
your Internet address book.
It also tries to connect to an IRC server and join a specific IRC channel. The
worm sends information to IRC every 30 seconds to keep itself connected, and to
retrieve any commands from the IRC channel.
Via IRC, the author or distributor of the worm can obtain system information
including the computer name, product name, product identifier, product key,
registered owner, registered organization, system root path, version, version
number, ICQ identification numbers, ICQ nicknames, victim's email address, and
Dial Up Networking username and passwords. In addition, being connected to IRC
opens a security hole in which the client can potentially be used to receive
and execute files.
Repair Information
To remove the PrettyPark worm:
On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
Type REGEDIT, then click OK.
Modify the following Registry value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\exefile\ shell\open\command

and change

files32.vxd "%1" %*

to

"%1" %*

For clarity, these seven characters are the following: double quote, percent
sign, the numeral one, double quote, space, percent sign, and asterisk. Don't
forget the space.

Delete the PrettyPark.exe file.
Restart your computer.
Delete the \Windows\System\Files32.vxd file.
Safe Computing
Because of Worms and Trojan Horse programs, you must practice safe computing.
Be suspicious of executable file attachments (for example, .exe, .shs, or MS
Word, or MS Excel files), especially ones from newsgroups or unknown sources.
For continuous protection, always run Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect and use
LiveUpdate to make sure you have the latest virus definitions.
