My '88 Ranger was probably goin' to need a new transmission in about 20,000
more miles but I sold it so I don't have worry about it. But I would have
deffinitly put the stock type transmission back in it, it is by far the best
way to go. If your having so much trouble with your 5speed, you should
probably find yourself a new transmission man. Those transmissions are
plenty strong for a 2.9L. We're paying about $1.37 for gas, but we're
working on my new Ranger (it was rolled over when we bought it) right now so
I'm drivin' the ole '84 6.9L F-250 2WD. I'm paying about $1.45 for diesel
> right now.
Diesel is expected to peak around here at about $3.00 a gallon
though. I won't be able to afford to drive to work so I'll have to quit my
job....LOL!!! My Ranger should be done it about a month and a half though.
I expect about 20 mpg with it. The '84 is only gettin' about 12 mpg. That
hurts!

I believe the stock tires are 28 " for your truck and that the 33s are
actually 32.5". This gives a new gear ratio of: (32.5 / 28) X 3.08 = 3.57.
I would think 3.55 would make a good match, leaving your spedo and engine
> RPM about the same. The up side to 3.55 is that most automatics come stock
with 3.55s (bone yards are full of them). The down side is that the front
carrier must be replaced to accommodate them.

PS. If your truck has a tendency to wander with the bigger meats, added
caster and a very slight tow in will make it ride like stock again.

Hi, I have a 1989 Ford F150 4x4 300 L6 , 4sp/OD. It came stock with 3.08
gears. I'm
now running 33-12.50-15 BFG AT's and I want to replace the factory gears
with
between a 3.50-3.73 gear ratio. Does any one have any suggestions about what
gear ratio I should use and how it will affect my ride?

Thanks, Nelson

I have a 72 f100 4X4 with a 429 conversion. I was up on the mountain
playing around in the snow. When i got back home i noticed a slight oil
smell. When i poped the hood i noticed that the dipstick looked like it
had come loose and was mooving freely and i looked at the base where it
screws into the pan and sure enough there was a little spraying of oil. I
attempted to tighten it up but to my supprise it was already tight. What
do i do? I thought i should ask before i pull the dipstick to investigate.
Do you think this could be a problem with the tube or the pan? Who sells
new dipsticks for a 429 pan?

Subject: Carriers and Dana Rebuilds... What is a spindle bearing

Here's what I found out about the little baby bronco while it was at the shop
today. It is getting the gears dropped from 3.45 to 4.11.

The shop called me today. Turns out that my Dana 28 needs a few more parts than
they originally diagnosed. Worst of it is, my spindle bearing has taken a beating
and now is mangled. Useable, just not perfect. (?) They said that they could work
on it. I'll inquire more about it tomorrow when I pick it up and pay for
everything. What does a spindle bearing do? What is it used for?

Now, I did replace the U joints in the front drive line, and front Axle back when I
replaced the tie rod ends and lower/upper ball joints. Hmm.. Could I have hurt
something while working on this? It was my first real automotive project when I got
the car.

I found out, as most of you were correct, the 7.5" rear end doesn't need a new
"carrier". That's the front only. The back doesn't need any carrier, just a new
ring and pinion, plus install kit.

Hmm...

So far they charging me $1400... I wonder what surprises the rear gear swap should
bring. That's the diff that I had previously blown up. The one that I swapped in
was used, but checked. (Cost me $550!!) I anticiapte fewer problems with it, as the
front diff was the original that came with the truck.

We'll see...

Adam

Why do the Rangers Roll? I have a 1988 Bronco II with 3" James Duff Suspension,
2" James Duff body lift and 31" tires, and I have never gotten into a dangerous
situation. I was always told that the BIIs have a tendency to get tipsy... I've
never seen it.

I had a friend who rolled his 1987 EB Ranger. It was a 2.9 4x4, fully loaded,
even had the dual tanks. We were up in Oregon, and he takes a hill at near 30
MPH, in 4x4 hi with THREE PASSENGERS, rolls his truck and wrinkles the body.
Both sides are messed up, windows are fine and the hood stays down.

Everyone gets out via the windows. I come by and roll him back over with my
Winch. We let his truck sit for an hour, and she starts right up. He drives the
600 miles back home, no problem.....
