We just completed analyzing the web server log files for December 2000. We had a amazing 675,000+ visitors for the month, double what we did in the Summer. FTE is on track for our goal of 1 million visitors/month by Spring 2001. Thanks to everyone for your support over the years. Ken Payne Admin, Ford Truck Enthusiasts ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 21:26:12 -0500 From: Ken Payne <kpayne Subject: ADMIN: New list policy Since December 2, FTE has received a total of 24 emails from list subscribers containing the "Sexy Fun" virus (sometimes known as "Snowhite and the Seven Dwarfs"). In each case, our anti-virus software has caught it. Additionally, the list server has successfully stripped virus code 36 times since Dec 2 (you can't get a virus through our list server because it strips all attachments). I don't know who started this epidemic but everyone who's system has sent a virus is at fault. Anyone with a computer connected to the Internet should, without exception, run anti-virus software. Our new policy is: Make sure you have anti-virus software on your computer. Although our list software rejects posts with attachments, we are notified by it of all attachments. If we receive notification that a virus was sent by your system, you will be removed immediately and banned from resubscribing. In other words, if your system sends a virus, you can't resubscribe ---- forever. Yes, this is harsh, but the issue is very serious. What would you do if you received emails with virus attachments 1-5 times per day? If you don't have anti-virus software, do yourself a favor and get it. Then run the update utility every week or two. Later, Ken Payne Admin, Ford Truck Enthusiasts ------------------------------ From: "Peter Calabrese" <snkypete Subject: Re: ADMIN: New list policy Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 21:42:56 -0500 Ken, As someone who works in the computer field I have to ask a question..... Since new viruses come out each and everyday - some of those smaller than others, some very large/dangerous - even someone who updates their DAT file on a weekly basis can get infected with a virus since a new virus can literally infect the world in a day. If the virus sends emails automatically, these messages could go out without the members knowledge. I completely understand that it gets frustrating having to deal with virus problems on a daily basis myself, but perhaps a better solution would be to give that member a warning and if they send a second virus they would be banned (not everyone is 100% computer savvy). Or perhaps see which virus it is and if it's an older one that someone *should* be protected against, then take action. Not trying to tell you how to run your list, just trying to look out for those who are less computer literate.....just a suggestion.... New list policy This email is in response to a question/concern posted on a couple of the mailing lists.... First, if anyone doesn't believe the virus isn't a serious problem, I just received two more email's from list members while writing this that had the previously mentioned virus attached. Second, it takes far too much time to keep a score board of who's been warned and who hasn't. I'm not going to be an absolute tyrant, if the virus is too new for anti-virus software I certainly won't fault the user. If however, the virus is currently covered by anti-virus software they'll be unsubscribed. I understand that not everyone is computer savvy, but anti-virus software is a basic necessity. Since viruses make prime-time news, how can anyone not be aware that they exist? No one gets AIDS on purpose, but anyone having sex out of wed-lock without a condom has no one to blame but themselves if they get infected. Likewise, take precaution with your system and it will not get infected. There's one way users can prevent infection of their system even by new viruses that haven't yet been added to their anti-virus software: Don't open executable attachments (including self-extracting ZIPs), don't open screen saver attachments and don't use Microsoft e-mail software or if you do use it, turn off macros. Also, my family and FTE's employees are entirely dependent on the operation of FTE's 5 computer systems in order to make a living. The list users are not dependant on the operation of our systems in order to earn a paycheck. We, however, are. There's more here at stake than someone not being able to read list mail. Let me put it this way.... if you ran a business and someone wrote you a check that bounced, would you take a check from them again? Ken Payne Admin, Ford Truck Enthusiasts ------------------------------ From: "Peter Calabrese" <snkypete Subject: Extended Warranty Pricing? Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 21:00:53 -0500 I can't recall which list it was and I've tried searching the archives, but somewhere I read a post about a dealer that sells ESP's at just above cost. I've done searches on Yahoo and Goto.com and came up with a few placed, but nothing of substance. Any information is appreciated....
