This needs to be addressed on the small chassis truck list.
The "small-list" covers the Ranger, Explorer, Bronco II and
Aerostar.

This list (97up) is for full size SUVs and trucks.

Subject: squeeky brakes

With the brake pedal about halfway down to tight - at the point where the
brakes aren't really slowing the vehicle, skreeeeeeeech, until I put more
pressure to STOP.

Any ideas?

Yep;
Depends on the mileage, you didn't say, but it could be your wear indicators
starting to tell you something.

The other possibility is that the pads are loose enough in the calipers that
they vibrate until you put pressure on them. There is an anti squeak compound
available to put on the back of the pads to dampen that.
