No misprint. 5w-20 is what it calls for. re the manual: "use motorcraft
part: xo-5w20-qsp or equivalent" I can send you a scanned image (bmp) of

Subject: 4.6L Engine-->Transmission Combinations

Can anyone tell me if the 1997 4.6L engine can be mounted to an E4OD/4R100
transmission? My 97 Expedition 4x2 is at 180,000+ miles, and I'm
anticipating a transmission failure before 200K. I believe it has the 4R70W
in it now, and I would like to put the beefier transmission in the truck so
that, when I have the money/time, I can either soup up the 4.6 or replace
it with a 5.4L (or, if I get lucky, score a Lightning engine).

If this is at all possible, what will I need in terms of equipment to make
the adaptation? Is this something the dealership is likely to touch? I'd
rather have them do it, since I plan on driving the wheels off the truck
and want to make sure that everything is done right. I'm sure that they
will screw it up one way or another, but at least it might be easier to
have them correct it after the fact.

BTW, I'd like to stay pretty much factory. I wouldn't mind installing the
E4OD/4R100, which is standard with the 5.4L, nor would I have a problem
changing the engine to a 5.4 or an SVT 5.4. However, I don't really want to
try to rebuild the engine or transmission with non-factory parts. I want to
keep everything where I can convince a dealer to work on it for other major
repairs that I anticipate in later miles.

Now that I think about it, has anyone had the gears changed in the rear
end? What was the cost? Any problems/suggestions/comments? What is the
suggested rear end? I have the 4.6 now with a 3.31 rear end, which is
fairly underpowered. Since I'm looking at a 5.4 or an SVT 5.4, what gearing
would be best? I'm thinking something in the neighborhood of 3.73LS. What
is stock in the Lightning?

I hope that makes some sense to someone... =)

Mobil-1 makes 0W-30 which, if I could not find 5W-20 I would consider using.
However, if your Ford calls for it, the dealer must have it, and if you are
on good terms, he ought to let you order a case or two at cost, many do.

Once upon a time....

The Lone Ranger was ambushed and captured by an enemy Indian war party.

The Indian Chief proclaims

"So, you are the great Lone Ranger. In honor of the Harvest Festival,

You will be executed in three days. But, before I kill you, I will

You three requests. What is your first

request?"

The Lone Ranger responds,

"I'd like to speak to my horse."

Chief nods and Silver is brought before the Lone Ranger. The Lone

Ranger whispers in Silver's ear and the horse gallops away.

Later that evening, Silver returns with a beautiful blond woman on his

back. As the Indian Chief watches, the blond enters the Lone Ranger's

tent and spends the night.

The next morning the Indian Chief admits he's impressed.

"You have a very fine and loyal horse, but I will still kill you in two

days. What is your second request?"

The Lone Ranger again asks to speak to his horse.

Silver is brought to him and he again whispers in the horse's ear. As

before, Silver takes off across the plains and disappears over the

horizon. Later that evening, to the Chief's surprise, Silver again

returns, this time with a voluptuous brunet, even more attractive than

the

blond. She enters the Lone Ranger's tent and spends the night.

The following morning the Indian Chief is again impressed.

"You are indeed a man of many talents, but I will still kill you

tomorrow. What is your last request."

The Lone Ranger responds, ....
