After adding three ounces of brake fluid, the pedal now stays up. Of >course, I only drove it at 15 mph around the block! Then it's (probably) your rear brakes (If you have the original MC). When I replaced the MC on my 78 E250, the autoparts nerd gave me the wrong one. The one he gave me would have worked, but the smaller resivoir would have been feeding the disks (the claipers take a whold lot of fluid!). Of course, I took it back. Just because the leak is with the rear system, it does not mean that it is a leaking wheel cylinder. You really have to find out where the fluid is leaking from. Take it to a self serve car wash and wash off all the fluid that may have spilled from refilling (around the master cylinder, and along the lines). Let everything dry, then pump you brakes. Look around the master cylinder, and along the lines, particularly at the connections. You are looking for a wet spot. Unfortunately, the drums on the Dana 60 are a bit of a problem to remove, so it's not an easy thing to check the wheel cylinders, but you can check everything else. > > Big Blue's headed for the shop next week, but I'll spend some time >under >there beforehand. I want to be prepared for the dealer's diagnosis. Some >odd things have happened over there. I'd like to have some idea what's >wrong before I go. > Things to watch for: Selling you a rebuilt master cylinder when you don't need one. Selling you rebuilt calipers in the front when your problem is with the rear (the sales pitch with both of these is something like "well, the seals are gone in your wheel cylinders. The seals in the master cylinder and calipers are just as old, so you might as well replace these as well"). If you aren't careful, you will spend $500 getting a $10 wheel cylinder replaced. Another one that always tickeled me was "your shoes (or pads) only have 1/3 of the thickness remaining, so you might as well replace them." One third is a signifigant amount of life, and is not an indication that they need replacing. Ask the guy "is that the problem?". If it is not the problem, why are you trying to fix it? Things I would be sure of: _IF_ a leaking wheel cylinder is the problem, replace both. You don't want to go thorugh this again in a couple of months, do you? (probably not ever). I also would insist they flush your brake lines with new fluid. DOT 3 fluid absorbs water and becomes contaminated. Probably, your wheel cylinders started to leak because bits of rust cratered the seals. If you don't flush the system, you leave that junk in the lines to get your new seals. Another suggestion, which you aparently picked up on already, take it to your friendly Ford dealer. Particularly with the 3/4 ton. Other shops that do brakes for cars and light trucks may not have the tools to take your drums off (assuming it is a Dana 60--someone has really buggered up the axle nuts on my van because they did not have the proper socket to take them off). In addition, they will only use factory approved parts--no cheapo parts for the brakes. Failing brakes is a scary thing. If you need your whole brake system overhauled, do it. But, one of the biggest scams (in my opinion) in auto repair is rebuilding good brakes, using the excuse "well, it is a saftey thing. You don't want to take a chance on your brakes, do you?" Good luck. chris north ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jul 1997 12:38:25 -0700 From: "Jim Strigas" To: Subject: Re: '76 ford Highboy, Cab Mounts Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > This truck is in excalant condition but the only thing that was wrong with > it when I got it was cab mounts.... I'll add something here. My '71 F100 was a 6 cyl truck, but came with a 31-spline limited slip 9". I'm sure the motor and axle were origional, they agree with the door tag info... The 31-spline has allegedly got a 3750lb rating instead of the 3200 or 3400lb of the 28-spline.(according to the auto parts books) It also uses a larger wheel bearing which is about $80 instead of the $22 bearing that the 28-spline uses. Sigh. >on the ouside, the difference in these 3 is measureable = >by the length that the center weldment runs out before the round axle = >tube is welded on. Hmm, that's interesting. I assume the heavier duty units are longer. (center section wider) Is this a reliable way to tell a 31-spline from a 28-spline HD unit? Gotta start watchin at the wreckers..
