Does anyone know for sure that you can or can't get the 3.73 limited slip axle with a SINGLE rear wheel F350? The invoice shows what features can be ordered together or which ones can't be ordered (like I can't order 4.10 limited slip rear axle with my V10 engine). Their prices are correct except on top of the invoice Ford Bills us for the amount of fuel the vehicle is shipped with ($9-25 worth) and every region adds a FDAF assessment (Ford Dealer Advertising Fund). This varies slightly region to region and from different car lines. It is usually around $140. This money is used for the regional promotions. For example, my region as 6 months free fuel on ZX2, $250 additional rebate on Ranger 4X4, and free bedliners in Ranger and all F-series trucks (starting tomorrow). However DOC fees and other charges are not real Ford charges and who knows what else somebody might try to slip in. I have talked to some people at Ford and there will probably be more axles available this fall (they have to emissions certify each ratio with and without Limited slip). Also look for some new colors and deletion of some of the lesser selling colors (purple and orange). The same names show up again later on the list bragging about how much power the Cummins has compared to the Power Stroke. If you have driven both you would not be able to make such a conclusion (yes I am biased but they are VERY different in power). Also it says that they only build 3 motors a week for new trucks, well I get one of those three every week so I guess I am pretty lucky. Also they start the Dudge crew cab rumor a little lower. So I would say a couple of Dudge fanatics are trying to mess with the Ford list. Can you blame them they are way behind in technology, options, power, mileage and still cost more! The system the SD uses is the same as all Ford's have used with push button or knob 4x4. The Explorer and Expediton use Control Trac witch lets the computer engage and disengage the transfer case without driver input to allow for a suprise patch of ice. The Hub setup is new (shared with the Ranger) because the old auto hubs were a problem, but I don't think there will be any (everything brakes its just how often) problem that the other systems (manual or whatever) won't have. I one in the computer and got no hold info. Most of the SD's I am selling have the SOF and I haven't seen one problem yet (other than user error, you have to be in neutral not park to get out of low range). In a message dated 4/29/98 12:52:53 PM Central Daylight Time, unionaut > I think somebody might be having some fun here. The same names show up >again later on the list bragging about how much power the Cummins has >compared to the Power Stroke. If you have driven both you would not be able >to make such a conclusion (yes I am biased but they are VERY different in >power). Agreed. The new 24 valve Cummins (I.S.B.) will not win a race with a late model Power Stroke, although I do think they will pull heavy loads together. Dodge / Cummins did not take over the hot shot trucking industry from Ch*vy with an inferior product in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ford's are still a minority in this market, but the new Super Duty F550 and Power Stroke combined with the new electronic controls on the 24 valve Cummins may change that mix in the near future. I have heard Ford has had problems with the electronic controls and so has Dodge. I hope to hear much more about the Super Duty from this list. BTW, who had the name "Super Duty" first, Pontiac or Ford? > Also they start the Dudge crew cab rumor a little lower. A little lower? There will NOT be a Dodge crew cab in the foreseeable future > So I would say a >couple of Dudge fanatics are trying to mess with the Ford list. I haven't seen this, was it recent? I'm only on the '97 and up list, could that have been on one of the other Ford lists? If you still have that, would you be kind enough to forward it to me? > Can you > blame them they are way behind in technology, options, power, mileage and > still cost more! Can you be specific about technology, price, and options? The other items are subject to the old Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV) syndrome of E.P.A. disclaimers. I think ALL the heavy duty trucks are extremely overpriced. Best Regards, Robert Stout ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 00:08:09 From: Doug Munday Subject: E4OD Transmission I have a 1997 F-150 SuperCab 4x4 with the 5.4L and E4OD transmission. I am wondering if anyone else feels that Ford really made a boo boo with this transmission and how it shifts? What I am referring to, is the fact that the transmission, while driving around 30 to 40 mph and out of OD, will not come out of TC (torque converter) lockup until you mash on the throttle and the trans downshifts to second with a jerk and a roar! Every other modern auto transmission that I know of, including my old Ranger, my wife's Explorer and my fiend's 1997 F-150 with the 4.6L and 4R70W trans will unlock from TC lockup to provide the torgue to smoothly accelerate. The trans also goes into TLC much too early, around 30 mph, which makes things worse. I live in the mountains and drive at the 5000 to 7000 foot elevation around winding mountain roads and this truck is a pig until you put your foot in it to get it to downshift. A terrible waste of a good engine! I have taken it in to the dealer twice and have confirmed that nothing is wrong with the truck. I drove another similar truck, except 1998, and it did the same thing. I have talked to the Qualify Engineer at the Ford transmission plant and he has confirmed that this is how the E4OD was....
