An automatic has a torque converter. This allows slip and multiples torque. Most torque converters are 2 to 1 (or in that range). This means that if you have 500 lb/ft at the flywheel it gets multiplied to 1000 lb/ft going out, therefore giving more power for towing. The drawback comes from automatics used to loose a lot of horsepower in the process and also got worse mileage. In the later trucks they have made them more efficient and when cruising the torque converter can "lock up" which cuts the slip and improves mileage. This is a hacked up version of what happens but it gives you the theory of why a auto will pull more than a Manual transmission. Nathan Bernard Union Auto, Inc. The keyless entry and power seat probably share a wiring harness (or they just want to sell more). There is a lot of weird stuff like this when they redesign a vehicle. The Aux. idle control is only available with the Power Stroke witch is a drive by wire engine. There is no throttle cable. If you use a Wrecker, Ambulance, or something that uses PTO or needs RPMs increased to run a hydraulic pump or other unit the Aux.. idle control does this. If you have a gas engine you hook a manual cable to the throttle to accomplish this. Nathan Bernard Union Auto, Inc. I put one in and it says "Super Duty DRW with gas engine HOLD TBD" so it may be a while. There might be other restrictions I have missed also. I just listed the ones I see on a regular basis. I've ordered the same truck (with a May 18 ETA, yippee) and I went with the V10 and 4.30 gears. The 4.10 gears seemed like a more ideal ratio, but Ford won't sell that rearend with the V10. I too am hauling a 3,000+LB camper. My main reason for getting the 4.30 gears is that I'm planning on getting bigger tires down the road and that will change the effective ratio down to something like 4.10. I went with the V10 because I have a 302ci V8 in my current Ford pickup and I just want more HP and torque. I've towed trailers with my current truck and it just lacks power in the mountains where I live (Washington state). You should be able to get any gear you want ,unless the axles are different for the v10 and diesel. I was under the impression that all 250 and 350 4x4's got a dana 50 front / 10 1/2 ford rear(with srw) and the drw got dana 60 front and dana 80(or 135) rear. This would have been my choice, too. But without the LS axle I won't do it. The OHC engines do seem to like gear, though. A lot of guys are running 4.10s in their Cobras and love it. They don't seem to lose as much in the mileage dept. either. A couple of questions, if you don't mind. . .please. 1) Has anyone else's handle for the brake release broken? 2) I bought a light for the outside of the truck, about 9 inches long, it says to wire it to a 12 volt thing, or the lighting wiring system. I do not know how to do this. Does anyone have easy instructions? 3) My tires squeal just about every corner. The tire is so smooth you couldn't find the difference between the tire's texture and the texture of a pear. Why did they wear so fast? (15k miles). I only went....
