I order the van with the trailer option and found out the hitch platform is not included. Not a big deal I hope. What I was look for was advice on the different platforms and manufactures that are available. Also the concern is the van has a step bumper and I would like a platform that sits back as far as the back of the bumper if possible. I have seen only one other van with a step bumper and a platform. The platform was way under the van. I had the previous tow vehicle (Chevy) that the platform was too far under the vehicle and it was a real hassle. Any help would be great. With a club Wagon I would make sure you got a class III, unless you just know that you'll never tow anything relatively heavy. As far as the location goes, I don't think your going to have much choice. Most are designed so that the frame of the receiver is behind the bumper and the receptacle is typically flush or slightly recessed from the outside edge of the bumper. I've had no complaints with either Reese or Drawtite. Try going to http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.hitch-web.com. I wasn't sure which exact van you had so I tried a 98 E250 with a step bumper. This is what I got: Reese had three for this configuration application. Each had the following footnote: "Will not fit standard van with 2.25-75R16 spare tire." There was one standard Class III/IV and two "High performance". Drawtite had two models the MAX-E Loader and the MAX-FRAME. They each had this footnote: "Vans equipped with factory step bumper require 12" long ball mount/wt. dist. shank." That sounds like your original problem w/ the Chevy. And finally Putnam had one model. Their CJ series receiver. It had no footnotes. I don't know if that's because it fits the way you want or there's just a lack of information. I've never used a Putnam, but I have never heard anyone talk bad about them either. I've always just bought my receivers at my local parts store where they know little to nothing about them (of course I already knew what I needed). I would think that a specialty dealer like Hitch-Web could really help you find what you need. They've got an 800 number on their site as well. Good luck! Has anyone had any experience towing with the V-10? What kind of milage are you getting towing and alone? Do you have any comments on the new electronic automatic transmission? The transmission (4EOD) was my only problem on my '91 F-150 but I understand that the new (R100) is much improved and handles up to 500 lbs. of torque. I would appreciate any comments on the 5.4L vs. the 6.8L Triton engines. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 13:52:28 -0600 From: "Stout, John Paul (MCI)" Subject: RE: Exhuast Update Hey Jason, Did you go with the 2 Chamber or Three Chamber? This setup is LOUD at WOT. It has a little deeper rumble at idle, and when shifting makes a really cool burbling sound. It is really loud when you are romping on the gas. It did increase the power a little too. How do I know? Seat of the pants. When pulling out of the shop I punched it and it pushed the lumbar support in a little. Scared me at first, it had never done that before I thought they broke the seat. Anyway it is pretty cool. I plan on doing a full story on it, installation, part #'s, photo's and sound files if anyone is interested. Lemme know. This setup sounds tons meaner than the Gibson. Truck month is coming up and Ford is already starting the specials. We now have 0.9% APR for 48 months on Rangers (and Taurus) and 3.9% APR for 60 months. Just this morning I got a letter saying that starting Monday every Ranger and F-series (including Super Duty) will get a free bedliner. This is a regional special for dealers in the Kansas City region ( parts of Iowa, Missouri, Kansas). If you are in another area you won't get this. There will probably get another special of some sort though. Also if you are in another area when a regional special is going on (there common we've had $1250 rebate on Ranger 4x4 where Chicago only has $1000) the rebates are paid buy your zip code. So if you had a PO box in a town in the other district you would be eligible for the incentives (hint, hint). On a similar note, if your looking for a V-6 F-150 now is the time to get one. Ford has lowered the price $500. This is due to a shortage of V-8's and a overabundance of V-6's. We also have a bunch of regional packages for XL's with the V-6. There is a Tutone paint with chrome wheels and OWL 4x2 for $0 and a Sport package with painted bumpers (ala STX) 60/40 seat and chrome wheels and OWL tires XL 4x2, and a package of chrome wheels, OWL tires (255's on 4x4) and a stripe package. These last two trucks are usually cheaper than ordering one without these options. This is for Kansas City region but I am sure every region has specials like this with the engine shortages.
