I suspect your short bed truck should not be used to tow a 35 foot 5th wheel
camper trailer. Trailer Life magazine consistently warns against the
practice. Check out their site at www.trailerlife.com. You can also navigate
to the Good Sam Club site from their site. There is a 5th wheel hitch with a
fore & aft adjustment for use with short bed trucks. I believe it is designed
to be used in the forward position during travel to optimize the weight
distribution of the pin. Then, you can adjust it to the rear position for
optimum maneuverability at the camp ground. Perhaps this will allow you to
tow a long trailer with a short truck. Hope it works out for you.

I have a 1997 2WD F150 extended cab w/ 4.6L V8 and auto transmission. I
bought a K&N air filter which eliminated the flat spot in acceleration
around 2200 RPM but has not effected the gas mileage. I get 13 MPG
city, 15 MPG highway and _do_not_ hot rod it. It now has 40K miles and
the mileage has not improved. I accept the mileage as a trade-off for
the performance and ride but certainly wish it were better. When the
mileage dropped into the 10 MPG range I finally had it checked by the
dealership, $200.00 later I had a new set of plugs and plug wires and
the mileage had returned to the 13 /15 range. They said this was
average for this vehicle and the best I should expect, oh well.

For comparison my 1989 F150 (5.0L V8, auto w/ od) gets 16 / 18+ MPG but
has been relegated to work truck duty because it now has 150K miles.

It may be poor form to mention this on the Ford truck list but friends
who have '96-'98 Chevrolets seem to get significantly better mileage
with comparable or better seat-of-the-pants performance. I just don't
think the ride or the ergonomics compare with the Ford. As for Dodge,
they didn't offer a 3rd (or 4th) door when I bought this truck and so
didn't enter the equation.

i'm thinking of Buying a new F-150 4x4 X-cab with a v-8. I see everybody
talking about gas mileage on 2x4. I would like info. on a 4x4. I really like
the truck. I'm just wanting to know all about the truck before I buy oone.
