It is very common and has to do with the manufacturing tolerances of the engine. Of course, Ford says it will not have any effect on the perfomance or longevity of the engine. (Tranlated that means, "We don't want to pay to fix thousands of engines.") I was aware of this in my search for my current (used) 97 w/ 5.4, so I sought one that was relatively silent at start-up. So far, so good. This same thing happend to my cousin with his 1999 F-250 SD 5.4L. After several attemps to get rid of the sound, Ford service was unable to. They said to live with it. He then started lemon-law procedures and within one day Ford called and said they would replace the engine. I was waiting to use the on-ramp to I-25 North (181 exit) to Denver from Castle Rock. An 18 wheeler fully loaded with roofing shingles started out ahead of me. I am always curteous to traffic and let the 18 wheeler have 1/4 mile headstart. I was holding back this Ch*vy Su8ur8An, that was just too damn anxious. He even attempted to pass me on the On-Ramp, So I had to punch it earlier that I wanted. Just to keep that Ch*vy in line. I left the largest cloud of Soot you ever saw. By the time I reached 4th Gear (6-Speed Manual) I lost ALL power. I backed off to see what the problem was, I scanned the gauges, All read normal(I won't go off on the idiot gauges here). My first impreession at this time, "I blew all the vanes of the Turbo". It did not act like a waste gate. I took the next exit and looked for Oil/smoke/other problems. At first scan I saw nothing. I would not get any satisfaction at my dealer at 6:00AM, so I drove the F350 home. I looked at the engine thoroughly and finally found the problem. I blew the feed pipe that runs to the Intercooler from the Turbo. It was just the Band Clamp was too Loose. An 11mm socket later and I was on the road again. My Boost gauge does not have illumination so I could never have read the Boost Pressure that I was developing at night. I have never ran the Boost over 18 PSI. I don't know why today was any different. Maybe just cooler more dense air this morning, I don't know. Hey good point!! Although I've only had 2 problems with my 98 F-150 SC 4x4 leak in rear window and of course the famous 'crack'), I truly love this truck! Handles well, extremely comfortable seats IMHO, rides great, and I love the futuristic styling. I had this truck on a 6 hr. trip recently and it was so comfortable, plus I got a little over 19MPG with my 4.6L V8. I felt that wasn't too bad considering the weight and size of this vehicle. It is getting similar fuel economy that I experienced with my old '90 F-150 with the 4.9 L inline six. Oh yeah, I also like the smoothness of my E4OD tranny. I've never looked, but I'm sure there is a Chevy or Dodge list similar to this and I'll bet there is plenty of complaining there too! I feel after listening to other guys at work talking about their vehicles ( brands other than Ford ), they ALL have their share of problems and I've been lucky with my old '90 truck, my '98 and my wife's '94 Explorer! Great trucks all of them! Just my opinion. Ron - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Monday, September 27, 1999 9:07 AM Subject: Re: FTE 97up - 5.4 piston slap? > I've got a "98" SC 5.4. There have been periodic reports of the pipe blowing off as you've experiened. Usually under hard acceleration. I've never had the problem, and I've only noticed the problem on the 99's. Checking the clamps periodically seems to be a good idea. I usually check various belt(s) and clamps whenever I change the oil. I don't know what the turbo plumbing looks like on a 97 PSD, but I wonder if they have they have the flexible interconnects like the 99's. I bet they don't, which is why I almost never hear about this. Eventually, Ford issued a recall for Expeditions and replaced the "stalk" (turn-signal) lever on which all the wiper controls exist. Thousands of them were replaced under the recall. Apparently, the cause was corrosion. In my case, the washer started to get harder to use and took longer and longer to come on, or it needed to be pushed many times (sometimes while turning the wipers on-and-off too!). Anyway, the new stalk fixed it. Keith - ----- Original Message -----.... To access the rest of this feature you must be a logged in Registered User Of Ford Truck Enthusiasts
