I read an article some time ago, unfortunately, I can't remember the
source, about this issue. It is very common and has to do with the
manufacturing tolerances of the engine. Of course, Ford says it will
not have any effect on the perfomance or longevity of the engine.
(Tranlated that means, "We don't want to pay to fix thousands of
engines.")

I was aware of this in my search for my current (used) 97 w/ 5.4, so I
sought one that was relatively silent at start-up. So far, so good.

This same thing happend to my cousin with his 1999 F-250 SD 5.4L. After
several attemps to get rid of the sound, Ford service was unable to. They
said to live with it. He then started lemon-law procedures and within one
day Ford called and said they would replace the engine.

BTW, he picked his truck up in October of 1998.

Hey guys, great email listserv here... lots of great info. I'm
interested in a bug/rock shield for my '00 SD (had to try that number,
hehe). I really like the new style with the laid back look, but wondered how
easy, or HOW you wash underneath it? Any brand recommendations?

I've got a "98" SC 5.4. Has had the slap since day one. Now has 70+K on it
and runs as good as the day I picked it up. I am very pleased with the
interior, handling and overall appearance. (yes I have the crack in the
door) Does anyone talk about what they like about thier trucks? I can find
flaws in any production vehicle, I find less in Ford.

I like the Interceptor from Lund. It screws on under the hood, and is easy to
install. It stands off the hood far enough that cleaning behind it is no
problem.

Huh? My '98 F150XLT SC 4x2 4.6L has the filter just to the left (driver's
side) of the oil pan. There isn't anything blocking it from any direction.
I normally crawl under from the front to do it all, but I could crawl under
the side and get to it just as easily.

Ford has announced a upgrade package for F-250-550 Super Duty XLT's with the
Power Stroke and the 6 speed manual (exludes Motorhome chassis). (this is
due to a shortage of gasoline engines and automatics even though they don't
say it). What the package is:
CD/Cassette radio
Cab Steps
Sliding rear window
Privacy glass
OWL all season tires (N/A F-450-550 chassis cabs)
This will have a package price of $500 MSRP and an equal package discount
making these options free. The code for this package is 60D and it is
supposed to be available for ordering today (although at the time I'm
writting this the computer won't take the code).

Thanks for the update on the sheetmetal I will look tonite at the closely.
I just talked to a speed shop and he puts on alot of Basani exhaust systems. The
Basani is stainless also.
If and when I get it I will post my thoughts

He also recommended JDA headers (stainless) $639. His cost is $537 with him
installing it.

I know this is off topic of the F150's but the expedition has the same
tranny and that is what my question is concerning.
The transmission in the Expe slips from 2nd to 3rd gear. Whether under
normal or hard acceleration, the RPM's will jump up a little and then drop
so the gears can engage. This cannot be normal. Has anyone else
experienced this problem? If so, what is it? I'm taking it in to the
dealership tomorrow morning to have it looked at.

Hallo,

Did anyone find a solution for the washer fluid not coming out for a long….long time.
Mine takes about 4-5 hard push and then hold it down for about 10 seconds 'till the
washer fluid comes out. I took it to the dealer and they told me that this is the way
it should work.

Is there is a way, where you can get the water first and then start the wipers?

Hunter.

Hunter,

I had the very same problem on my 98 F-150 Lariat. The dealer replaced
the multifunction switch under warranty. Now it is good as new!

time.

Make sure the front bumper is not wet( i slipped and my butt landed right in
fire ants!)

Have some shop rags and go-jo handy.

Drain fuel out of houseing before removeing top.

Its a pain in the neck to reach behind the cover on top the motor.

Subject: FTE 97up - Extreme Boost

I want to share an experience I had this morning.

I was waiting to use the on-ramp to I-25 North (181 exit) to Denver from
Castle Rock. An 18 wheeler fully loaded with roofing shingles started out
ahead of me. I am always curteous to traffic and let the 18 wheeler have
1/4 mile headstart. I was holding back this Ch*vy Su8ur8An, that was just
too damn anxious. He even attempted to pass me on the On-Ramp, So I had to
punch it earlier that I wanted. Just to keep that Ch*vy in line.

I left the largest cloud of Soot you ever saw. By the time I reached 4th
Gear (6-Speed Manual) I lost ALL power. I backed off to see what the
problem was, I scanned the gauges, All read normal(I won't go off on the
idiot gauges here). My first impreession at this time, "I blew all the
vanes of the Turbo". It did not act like a waste gate.

I took the next exit and looked for Oil/smoke/other problems. At first scan
I saw nothing. I would not get any satisfaction at my dealer at 6:00AM, so
I drove the F350 home.

I looked at the engine thoroughly and finally found the problem. I blew the
feed pipe that runs to the Intercooler from the Turbo. It was just the Band
Clamp was too Loose. An 11mm socket later and I was on the road again. My
Boost gauge does not have illumination so I could never have read the Boost
Pressure that I was developing at night. I have never ran the Boost over 18
PSI. I don't know why today was any different. Maybe just cooler more
dense air this morning, I don't know.

My findings on the PSD without the assist of a turbo -

"A BIG FAT OLD LAZY DAWG, just after he eats"

Later guys,

Scott.

Hey good point!! Although I've only had 2 problems with my 98 F-150 SC 4x4
leak in rear window and of course the famous 'crack'), I truly love this
truck! Handles well, extremely comfortable seats IMHO, rides great, and I
love the futuristic styling. I had this truck on a 6 hr. trip recently and
it was so comfortable, plus I got a little over 19MPG with my 4.6L V8. I
felt that wasn't too bad considering the weight and size of this vehicle. It
is getting similar fuel economy that I experienced with my old '90 F-150
with the 4.9 L inline six. Oh yeah, I also like the smoothness of my E4OD
tranny.

I've never looked, but I'm sure there is a Chevy or Dodge list similar to
this and I'll bet there is plenty of complaining there too! I feel after
listening to other guys at work talking about their vehicles ( brands other
than Ford ), they ALL have their share of problems and I've been lucky with
my old '90 truck, my '98 and my wife's '94 Explorer! Great trucks all of
them! Just my opinion.

Two good things: no major issues with the engine, and the Che*y did'nt pass.

On the http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.ford -diesel. com/ website, I can recall a small handfull of
these cases.
There have been periodic reports of the pipe blowing off as you've experiened.
Usually under hard acceleration. I've never had the problem, and I've only
noticed the problem on the 99's. Checking the clamps periodically seems to
be a good idea. I usually check various belt(s) and clamps whenever I
change the oil.

I don't know what the turbo plumbing looks like on a 97 PSD, but I wonder
if they have they have the flexible interconnects like the 99's. I bet they
don't, which is why I almost never hear about this.

Anyone with knowledge of the 99 and 97 PSD can comment?

This problem was very common on '97 and '98 Expeditions. Eventually, Ford
issued a recall for Expeditions and replaced the "stalk" (turn-signal) lever
on which all the wiper controls exist. Thousands of them were replaced
under the recall. Apparently, the cause was corrosion. In my case, the
washer started to get harder to use and took longer and longer to come on,
or it needed to be pushed many times (sometimes while turning the wipers
on-and-off too!). Anyway, the new stalk fixed it.
