Most people can't even tell when their computer is learning or running. My experience is that a learning computer typically gets slightly less MPG, and may run a LITTLE rough here and there. I would definitely take it in, there's something wrong. I just hope it does it often enough, they can find it, or maybe the computer stored some useful error codes. Not filters, but bolt-on items. The URL is www.j--jent.com/. When I tried it the links to specific items were not working but it may be going now. I saw the information in Trailer Life magazine, so hopefully the web site is now functional. They are the best value. Get them. In the last month or so, this truck has slowly started pinging and knocking on warm days and appears to lose power when doing so. I am hauling very little in it. The knocking starts around 1700 rpm and keeps going up to 2500 rpm. I usually keep the rpm at 2000 or below. I'm going to take it to the dealer and complain, but I was wondering if anyone has had similar trouble, and can give some hints on how to handle this. - Stephen Witte San Diego, CA. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 12:39:00 EDT From: ROBBCWZ Subject: FTE 97up - Re:New F-150 stalling & suddenly accelerating When the AC compressor kicks in, it can cause what feels like "sudden acceleration" because the throttle is opened a tad to make up for the extra load. It was fairly noticeable on my '97 F-150, but on my '98 it's all but imperceptible; it must depend on how fine the adjustment is set. The '97 never stalled, but the '98 has done this just once (early in its life) and at a stop sign similar to your experience. Touch wood it has not done it again. Personally I'm not big on the "learning computer" excuses - a vehicle should be safe and operable from the get-go. I'm sure my insurance company, and anyone that I hit, would not accept that the accident occurred because the "computer was learning". While the people you talked with are correct about the truck having to learn how to idle, learn how you drive, etc., yes - I think it should be done doing that by now (long ago, for that matter). Even the day you drove it off the lot it shouldn't have done those kinds of things. That really sounds like you've got a problem with the computer or one of the components of the computer to me. I hate to say that, but there isn't a single facet of that engine's operation (including the timing) that isn't totally controlled by the computer. There are no adjustments. It should not surge, and it should not die. Note that under normal conditions, it will sometimes idle a *little* rough at stop lights, etc. This was programmed into the computer intentionally and has to do with conforming to government emissions regulations. But this is a whole different thing than what you're talking about. I'd get it in. Its probably a sensor or something. That's what warranty is for. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Aug 1998 21:50:30 -0500 From: "Jack Lubinski" Subject: FTE 97up - 97' F250 engine problems On a few previous posts a problem was reported with the 5.4 L triton engine regarding what is called "cold start knock". My 97 F250 is sounding a lot more like a diesel engine at start up as well. I returned the truck to the dealership a few days ago and was informed the engine would have to be replaced. This latest major problem follows a string of "quality control" difficulties we have experienced, ie premature rust on bumper and rims, oil and fluid leaks, faulty electrical swithch, front window condensation, faulty power window, recall for shift linkage and latest recall for wheel nuts. The vehicle is less than one year old and has under 20,000km!!! My first question is, are other ford truck owners experiencing this level of frustration with quality related issues? My second question is in regard to the engine replacement. Does anyone know if the Windsor plant worked out the piston slap problem yet? someone previous reported that a second 5.4 L was installed in their vehicle and within a month or so started to make the same noise again..l Now that's got to be a kick in the back side. Besides inconvenience, one month of crappy gas mileage during engine break-in only to have to go through in all again. As a life long Ford truck owner... I am very disappointed in Ford's new trucks. I am hoping my dealer can turn things around as they have been great with their service so far. jack lubinski == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Aug 1998 21:38:17 -0700 From: "Travis W. Marshall" Subject: FTE 97up - 98 Ranger aftermarket/stock upgrades--is it too late?? Hello group, a question about the seemingly basic stuff on my 98 Ranger. First of all; when I got the pickup I went with what I thought I needed most, XLT trim, Ext cab, 4x4, and misc. others. I however did not go with the power options package, which I thought twice about. What I would like to do, is locate a way to add the power door locks, but not necessarily the power windows, depending on cosmetics/cost for the truck. Does anyone know how I could go about getting either a stock (is it too late?) or after market kit to add the remote locks? Also, if there is an alarm system out there that might have it all inclusive? That is my ultimate goal here... I want a strong alarm, with power locks, and keep the cosmetic destruction on the low end. And of course, to throw in my 2 worth of knowledge on the "rear end noise" from the new Rangers; I was told "it happens" and that "anything gone wrong is my fault." So, the dealers basically say they aren't concerned. Of course, any help would be great, and I do enjoy reading everyone's posts! Keep them coming my way!!! Thank you in advance, Travis W.
