FTE 97up - Loose nuts

From: "Eric Elliott"
Subject: FTE 97up - Loose nuts

Hello,
My 98 F250 Light Duty left rear wheel had fretted against the brake hat. The
lugs were below 100 #feet but not loose. 3 other wheels had not signs of
fretting, but nuts could be tightened with a torque wrench set 70 #feet.
During routine tire rotation the wheel problem was found. Fretting damage
was limited to wearing off the disc (drum) hub machining marks. I am
satisfied with just torqueing the wheels to 100 #feet and checking again
10,000 miles.
Truck had 8000 miles of use with less than 1000 # loads, including over 5000
miles over 70 MPH towing a 2300 # trailer. Wheels were stock Lariat steel
with chrome wheel covers and plastic hub covers, not touched since leaving
dealer new. Brakes are disc in front, the rear has disc service brakes
combined with drum parking brakes.

Real glad that I rotated tires last Sunday!

Eric
