I have not been delivered my new truck yet, but I took the bare chassis for a ride. It is an F350 Super cab, chassis, 4X4,DRW, Auto, V10, 4.30 ratio. 2 observations...SLOW, will the engine power increase dramatically on breakin? High pedal effort brake pedal (this has vacuum booster, not hydro-boost). Next I permanently mount 4000 lbs of equip to the truck, so these 2 things may get a lot worse. Anyone out there using a V10 SD with a heavy load yet? My question is front suspension travel----I've got about 1" of travel before the body bottoms out on the rubber stops. Is this the normal amount of spring travel? = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 97up-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 97up-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 09:24:56 -0400 From: Chad Royse Subject: Re: FTE 97up - Suspension Travel I've got the same truck (except auto) and mine is the same way too. I have not seen a one of the vehicles involved have a problem. I have seen many vehicles that were never recalled have this problem. If you are worried have your lugnuts torqued to 100 lb/ft and this will make sure you don't have a problem. The media has blown this type of thing out of proportion. They started with air bags, 84 deaths to 1,800,000 air bag deployments (and 2,700 lives saved) and now they call them deadly. Saying this made their ratings better so now they are trying to scare everyone about recalls. Scaring people makes their ratings better so the media will do all of it they can. If there is ever a recall that is really dangerous they will call you instead of sending a letter, and then send a wrecker over to get the vehicle. Chevy had one like this on the new Corvette and immediately dispatched wreckers to make sure the vehicles didn't get driven. The brakes do feel different, this is the 4 wheel discs, Let me know what you think once you get it loaded and drive it some. Also the engines to gain a lot of power. I have a friend with a F-150 5.4L 4X4 that off the truck wouldn't turn the tires over. The other night (it has 10k miles on it now) he went by and spun the tires clear up the block. Also the V-10 is strange to drive due to it's power band. Pulling the low end torque will do the job easily (no complaints so far any way), but empty it does not feel impressive 'till it winds up and reaches its horsepower peek. Give it a few thousand miles and then let us know what you think. Also what did you have before? The way I understand the wheel situation is that Ford stopped using the tapered wheel nuts. They are now using "O" rings to center the wheels and then locking the wheel down with wheel nuts that are "flat" rather than coned shaped. The result of this is that the nuts loosen after awhile, and need to torqued again aftre 500 miles or so. Also, some wheel studs are breaking and the wheels are falling off of the vehicles. I have a 97 with 38K, 4.6, 3.55 with tow package. I have to say it is the WORST truck that I ever owned. I am in arbitration with the truck at the moment. I really do like the amenities included in the interior but I have to say that the drive line just PLAIN stinks in this vehicle. I believe that the engines is OK but that drive line is something else again. Glenn See wrote: > Just got back on the list after being cut off for some reason.
